Amazed and (not so) secretly proud of myself: another biased HCP remark about BF...

I'm not well at all so I went to the GP, as one does...

DTD struggles into GPs room with a 9 month old, a 2 1/4 year old and what turns out to be flu, an ear infection and a throat infection. Also sleep deprived and exhausted after looking after said DC alone through 3 1/2 days of high fever.

GP needs to prescribe ABs so I mention I'm BF. She gives me a look and says, in a patronising tone, "well, that will make you more susceptible to illness".

I have never had a ready answer to these sort of under informed / ill thought out statements but today I did. Despite feeling the worst I have in years.

It made me feel rather good!

But what did you say to her?

DrivenToDistraction · 17/03/2010 19:37

Oh, feck. Sorry. Am tres vague ATM...

Nothing too spectacular.

"Well yes, it would tend to give an evolutionary advantage, wouldn't it? The more a mother is ill the more specialised antibodies she can pass on".

(sounds a bit clunky as I'm translating)

Anyway, she agreed and suddenly became very pleasant.

TBH I've no idea if it's true, just something I was pondering the night before as I do seem to be ill more frequently when I'm BF.

Is it? I really don't know! I do seem to be ill more when I'm BF, but I tend to be sleep deprived too (have crap sleepers)...

'tis not something I've actually looked into.

Excellent!

Also, what a load of arse. (What she said, not what you said.)
