I have tonsillitis and have to stop breast feeding my four month old baby as antibiotics are not recommended for nursing babies.

For probably two weeks.

I don't know anything about bottle feeding and would be glad to know things like which formula to choose, which bottles are good, how often to feed.

I'd also like to hear from anyone else who had to stop breast feeding for a short time.

I'm going to really miss it.

Most antibiotics you can take while breastfeeding. I have taken antibiotics while breastfeeding.

Which antibiotics have you been prescribed?

Poledra · 03/03/2010 16:17

Hold on, do you really have to give up feeding for this? I've had ABs more than once while bfeeding (for an infection in my stitches with DD2, so she was only a few days old) and it didn't stop me feeding. The GP just made sure he gave me a suitable AB for a nursing mother.

rubyslippers · 03/03/2010 16:18

who has said you need to stop?

you can have ABs whilst feeding ... certain ones, but you can feed with some

i had them with DS for a very bad case of mastitis

have a look here

there is a good link, but i can't remember it off hand - something to do with mothers milk ...

am sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon

pookamoo · 03/03/2010 16:18

Poor you! Tonsilitis is yuck.

You will get good advice on here, but my instinct says pump if you can because your supply will drop off otherwise.

Could your doctor not recommend anything else for tonsilitis? I had it while bfing and didn't have to stop.

rubyslippers · 03/03/2010 16:18

x-posts there ...

Hopefully · 03/03/2010 16:18

I'm sure someone more use will be along soon, but I'm 99% sure that there must be an antibiotic you can use and continue BFing.

I was on antibiotics after giving birth due to tearing/possible infection and no one suggested not BFing - I know there are lots of different ABs in the world, but surely....

waitingforbedtime · 03/03/2010 16:19

I had tonsilitis and breastfed whilst taking antibiotics. In fact I breatfed a newborn when on ab for urine infection. Id call the doc and check again.

Massive Xpost!

HumphreyCobbler · 03/03/2010 16:21

Do get one you can take and breastfeed. Keeping up your supply (you will need to pump about eight times a day), formula feeding AND being ill will really take it out of you.

fiveweeksandcounting · 03/03/2010 16:21

I fed whilst taking penicillin for Tonsillitis at 10 weeks and also took a fairly hefty mix of 2 anti-b's, can't remember which ones but they were fine for BF I was just told specifically to avoid alcohol with them as it would make me very sick, for an infected episiotomy when DD was a week old. I am next to certain that you don't need to stop.

belgo · 03/03/2010 16:22

You can look up what medications are safe when breastfeeding here.

If necessary the doctor can prescribe you another antibiotic.

pookamoo · 03/03/2010 16:43

OP it looks like most people agree on this one! Call your Doctor as soon as you can and get the ABs changed!

Hope you feel better.

pookamoo · 03/03/2010 17:00

Sorry that sounded really bossy, it wasn't meant to!
It's just that you shouldn't feel pressured into giving up bfing if you don't want to, and from what you say, you would like to carry on. Hopefully you will be able. Expressing while you're ill with a 10week old is not ideal.

RubyBuckleberry · 03/03/2010 17:00

i was on two lots of antibiotics after emcs. bf throughout! sure its fine :-) call that doctor!

pookamoo · 03/03/2010 17:01

Oh I'm rubbish I meant 16 week

puffinmuffin · 03/03/2010 17:32

Sorry, you are all right, I was anticipating what the doctor would say and feared the worst

I have been given penicillin and the doctor assures me it will be fine.

Thanks for your replies!

Yay! Glad you're able to continue without having to argue with crazy health professionals.

pookamoo · 03/03/2010 19:23

Phew! Glad it is all ok.
Have lots of cuddles with your LO and hopefully you'll be feeling better soon.

belgo · 04/03/2010 06:57

that's good. Hope you are feeling better soon!

mummyof2byapril · 04/03/2010 08:19

I've had an ear infection, throat infection, UTIs, all while breastfeeding over 2.5 yrs, all I took antibiotics for and lots of painkillers, never once was advised not to breastfeed.
Sounds like a second opinion is needed, doctor could still be living in the stone age.
Chances are if you have to stop for 2 weeks, you won't be breastfeeding that child again.
