Are you b or ff?

Congrats btw! Think I was on your 'is this labour?' thread!

mawbroon · 27/02/2010 20:18

If he is rooting etc, then offer him the breast. He is working hard to establish your supply!

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 27/02/2010 20:18

Sorry Breastfeeding!! How are you doing notnowbernard?!

Feed him all the time he wants to eat I say! He's only 1 week old and he needs to get your supply going. See it as an opportunity to rest while you feed him. He will slow down in time.

My midwives said you can't overfeed a breast fed baby...

notnowbernard · 27/02/2010 20:22

Fine, thanks

How was the birth in the end?!

Re your OP - I would continue to offer the breast when he's looking for it - probably still getting supply up. GREAT that he hasn't lost

Neither of mine lost either, gained loads from week 1... both were VERY sucky though. I did give dummies early on, but only when I was sure they were getting enough milk (weight gain, lots of wet and dirty nappies). With dd2 in particular the dummy helped as she wanted to suck all the time and got terribly windy as a result. The dummy worked a treat as a 'soother', IYKWIM

Aranea · 27/02/2010 20:28

My dd1 was like that - she never lost any of her birthweight, and always seemed to want to feed. I used to get quite tense about comments on how I was feeding her again etc.

But I kept being told that you can't overfeed a bf baby, so I just went along with it. She never really changed until she started solids at 6mo - till then she couldn't be relied to manage more than 2hrs without a feed (and if, as happened once, I wasn't there, nothing could console her - so I am pretty sure she really needed that feed).

She did get very fat - she was on the 98th centile - but the HV said it was fine as she just followed that curve once she got up there. She's 5 now and quite slim, with a fairly average appetite. Maybe even a slightly smaller appetite than average.

Anyway, I would definitely say you're doing the right thing if you go along with what your baby is asking for.

Congratulations on your new, thriving baby!

Birth was fast 23mins in total! 1hour from first contraction really ......still a bit shocked! Going for a debrief next week.

Thank-you.....I think he likes the comfort too of lots of cuddles! He was still rooting after both boobs in the last hour so is now on daddy whilst daddy tries to eat spagetti!! My boobs don't feel as full today.....do you think I'm running low??

OP posts:
notnowbernard · 27/02/2010 20:51

23 minutes! No wonder you were shocked... hope it wasn't too traumatic, though, and that the debrief is useful

Re your boobs not feeling full... need to say now I'm not a BF expert BY ANY MEANS. But could it be that they're settling down a bit following on from your milk coming in? When are you next due a visit from mw or hv? See what they think, but hopefully he'll still be gaining nicely and you'll know he's getting plenty

somanyboyssolittletime · 27/02/2010 20:52

Hi there! Congratulations! Have got a 1wk old too who sounds the same - am feeding pretty much continuously, but my boobs have settled down a bit today. Don't think you can be running low, just that demand and supply are evening out. Looking forward to another sleepless night! Have fun - they are so lovely aren't they?

Aranea · 27/02/2010 20:59

23 minutes??!!
Well done you...

Don't worry about whether your breasts feel full - it doesn't mean there's not enough milk if they don't feel full. If your baby is still happily feeding away, all is well.

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 27/02/2010 21:01

Last m/w visit is Tuesday Don't want her to go! Are you ok notnowbernard ??
somanyboyssolittletime glad your LO seems similar....I have quite enjoyed have the full boobs as it felt like he was getting loads. They are soooooooooo yummy.....the babies that is and clearly the boobs too!

somanyboyssolittletime · 27/02/2010 21:08

Yes quite enjoying the page 3 look as a change to my usual less well-endowed figure!

notnowbernard · 27/02/2010 21:13

I am fine, MaryP - actually, I am feeling lovely... I am sitting here feeling DC3 wriggle and squirm for the 1st time properly this pg

It's not just the 'popping' feeling, PROPER squirming and pushing sensations. I'm 18w

GreenMonkies · 27/02/2010 21:14

It all sounds perfectly normal to me! Feed him when he roots, take advantage of the excuse to sit on your arse and eat cake and rest.

Neither of mine lost weight at all either, both fed pretty much constantly and comfort sucked loads. Just go with the flow and enjoy the snuggles!!

GreenMonkies · 27/02/2010 21:15

notnowbernard I so miss the squirming.......

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 27/02/2010 21:58

notnowbernard enjoy!!!
I really wish I could sit around all day and just feed and watch him.....but my toddler has other ideas! I think feeding laying down is the way to go at night.
