What brand of formula do you use and should I change mine? help!

I have used Cow and Gate before with my daughter which took to it well and so chose the same with my 4wk old son. I don't think he is taking to it as well as my first. He first had a runny bum and very windy so got bad nappy rash. He was also downing the bottles ( born 10lbs) so we switched to hungrier baby formula. He started off constipated and now its back runny. And to top it off, now he has bumps all over his face and dont know if its baby acne or milk bumps. Does anyone think I should change his formula? My hubby has always wanted to try hipps b/c he heard it was good by numerous people. But whats the difference in each brand and why did you choose the one your using? I don't want to change it but i also don't want my son to keep on it if there is another out there more suited for him. Advice anyone?

i used hipp with the baby i care for also aptmil is really good

the constipation might be due to the hungry baby milk..

i would go for Hipp mainly because it is organic and has less stuff added to it, that could potenoitally cause an upset tummy

if in doubt speak to your doctor or HV about his pooing issues.

there is little difference between formulas, they are all similar to each other, but Hipp has less stuff added.

how many ounces is he having? unless he is downing 9 oz a time, you should really avoid hungry baby milk and tbh, i would avoid it all together at this young age.. babies hav frequent growth spurts and feed frequently, especially when newborns, it does not mean they are extraordinarily hungry

He is downing 5oz for a 4wk old. I was advised by both my MW and HV to do so. Its worked but now I know whats causing the problem, we tested his stools and he is borderline lactose intolerant.

If that didnt come back as such, i was really considering switching his formula to hipps or aptimel.

5 oz is not a huge amount especially for a 10lb baby. draining 9oz every hour ror so is a hungry baby

can you be borderline lactose intoleratn? thought iwas a yes /no thing

anyway, if i was you, i would consider changing to hipp and leaving hungry baby milk alone and double checking re the lactose thing

Second the advice to swap from hungry baby - it is harder to digest making baby feel fuller, but can cause constipation.

Borderline lactose intolerant....prob means they think he has secondary ie temporary LI, which is normally related to a previous tummy upset, nothing to do with a congenital condition.

Hungry baby milk is less easily digested than regular infant formula - babies are generally better off on the regular.

Aptamil. Recommended to me when DS was tiny because of runny poo and colic. He was 10lb 6oz born and ate like a horse (still does). I kept him on it right up to toddler milk and only changed him to cow's milk when he was 18 months.

I found hungry baby milk no use at all.

BertieBotts · 18/02/2010 16:48

Bear in mind that Aptamil is often recommended by health care professionals because it is heavily marketed towards them - hence it often has the reputation as "the best" but really no formula is better than another, they all suit different babies though so it's trial and error I am afraid! I would probably try Hipp first as it's cheaper.

I used cow & gate with dd1 (6yrs ago) and she was fine on it.

But when I used it with dd2 (2 and a bit years ago) they have changed it to include pre/pro biotics. Like your ds dd2 was very windy/runny bum and bad nappy rash. So I switch to Hipp organic as it is the only one which does not contain probiotic, and she was a lot better.

I am now using Hipp with ds and he been ok on it.
