and yes we would be expected to offer advice on positioning and latching, which seems to be not what you have been told? In fact I mentioned to the course leader what you had been saying on your course, SPB, and she said "what would be the point?"

We're now looking at different scenarios and how we would tackle of them, and I was surprised at how much help we could offer, in the case where mums had sore nipples/breasts. In many of the cases, we would still refer, but we would offer advice as well.

I was a bit at one scenario - "mum of 4,bfing youngest, bfing going well, you pay a visit and the house is untidy and their are dirty pots in the sink, older 3 running around happily and there is good family support, would you refer?"
One of the people in the group actually said she probably would

Remind me not to invite her around my house - she'd have the SS around like a shot

hi bt
last week was better actually imo, we talked about problems and how to spot them, we'll see how following weeks go
Am still a bit confused at not giving advice though, think i just have a completely different idea about what constitutes advice. Also that a woman with no actual problems can't ask a woman who's already successfully bf what she thinks of her latch - is it such a black art?? TBH that other thread has put me off a bit, even to the point of answering MN threads. Think i was more use untrained.
at referral for dirty dishes. if she does come round, bung em in the oven

Certainly it is not the impression that I got from Ros (course leader), she has never mentioned not giving P&L advice to anyone.

I've got my first volunteering thing tomorrow, going to a bfing group to help out, one of the bfing support home visitors(bshv) is away on holiday and it is a big group to be managed by only one, so Ros asked if anyone could step in. So I have volunteered!

I shall remember the oven trick ;)

Oh and today at the bfing group I normally go to, one of the mums was asking advice as she thought she may have thrush, she was asking one of the bshvs about it, and the bshv was asking me what I thought as well, and so we were both offering her advice.

sounds like your trainer has very different opinions from the NCT then, not sure how it's going to work out for us. As I said., although I think the course is getting better or coming together more I'm still not sure what the point of it all is, and have been a bit put off.
Never mind - I had to try it! Annoying thing is I have been trying to get onto one of these for the last 2 1/2 years!
