13wk DD - 5 feeds at night; 3 during the day. Help!

Before her 12 week growth spurt, my DD was getting quite good at sleeping. She'd go down at 7.30, we'd wake her at 11.30 for a very sleepy feed and then she'd go through until at least 6.30, if not 7.30. During her 12 week growth spurt, she started having longer feeds during the day and went back to waking up around 3 for another feed. At the end of her growth spurt (around 5 days ago) she seemed to get very confused and now feeds mainly at night. For example, last night she fed at 7.30, woke at 11.17, 2.16, 5.11 & 6.30 for a feed! Its now almost noon and she still hasn't wanted another feed - I tried giving her one at about 10.00 (when she used to have a feed) and again at 11.00 but whilst she latched on and had a bit of a suck, as soon as I sat her up, she sicked it up. Yesterday (after a similar night) she fed at 1pm, 4.30pm and 6.00pm.

What can I do to get her back into her old habits? Given how little she' having during the day, she obviously needs what she's taking during the night. As I said above, I've tried giving her extra feeds during the day but she sicks those up and if I give her the second breast at any of the night feeds, she's then sick.

Please share any tips or experiences with me. The lack of sleep is driving me to distraction. At least in the early days I didn't expect to do anything during the day but having had the luxury of a few weeks of decent nights, I'm used to being more active again during the day.

Thanks

Not sure how much help this will be to you as DS was bottle fed - but we had a similar problem. We needed to teach him about night and day all over again ! So, (and sorry if you already do all of this - but I didn't know), start again with the old routine (bath / feed / bed - or whatever you use). We used to put DS down at c.8pm, then during his 'confused' stage, he would wake up again c.11pm for a feed (then again 2pm / 5pm etc.) We gave in and fed him at the 11pm feed, but then gave him boiled (cooled obviously) water at any other night feeds. It only took him two nights to work out that if he didn't eat the food (milk) during the day, he wasn't getting any at night ! I don't want this to sound mean - I didn't do this from the beginning, it was just at about 12 weeks - when he'd already been sleeping through most of the night since about 7 weeks. It took 2 nights of pain to get back but it worked for us. Good luck x

Thanks, Rachel. I was thinking she might have got confused and that we'd have to re-educate her. Oh, the next couple of nights are going to be fun!
