Can an older baby suddenly start to have a bad latch?

My 7mo DD and I have been on a bumpy bf journey. I found it very difficult at the start (latterly found out DD has a tongue tie) and mixed fed for a while. Thanks to some great MN advice I managed to drop our one FF a day and ebf. I planned on giving up at 6 months as it was so difficult but from around 16-18 weeks it got so much easier. This last few days I've noticed DD is starting to suck the nipple only and not much areola and I think as a result my nipples are becoming a little sore. Is it possible she's changed her latch or something? We didn't have her Tongue tie snipped could that have anything to do with it? As I'm now actually enjoying it I'd like to keep going for a bit longer if possible.

Any thoughts?

TIA

My DS did this while teething. You have to just be firm with them getting it right...if it is teething use bonjela or whatever before a feed.

Yes, it seems to happen when they have got a new tooth, it's like they need to work out how this new thing fits into the equation. It sorts itself out in a few days - but yes, try different positions, teething gel and lots of lansinoh until it does pass

Although - missed the part about tongue tie in your post, if it doesn't sort itself within a few days it's probably worth getting that looked at again.

Thanks. No teeth yet so could be teething related. I'll try different positions. Every time I say no (sternly) and put her on the floor she just beams big smiles at me! Think I have to work on my bad cop persona....
