bf, red lump on edge of nipple

I've just been feeding and noticed a small, painless, red lump on the edge of my nipple. It looks a bit like it's developed out of one of the white things (sorry for ignorance, are they milk ducts?) round the edges of my nipples. Does this mean something is infected? Could it be a clogged duct? Most importantly: what do I do about it?

I would suggest if there in a few hours phone the doctor and try and arrange an appt, it could very easily be a bruse. Not long ago, I had a small lump for a couple of days which I worried about until I realised it appeared after dd and I had been play fighting and she had hit me on the breast, it then vanished totally before I could see the doctor so I cancelled the appt.

Lump has gone down and now looks a bit like one of ds's milk spots. Still doesn't hurt. Curiouser and curiouser...

I got this happening and mw told me to massage the area in case was a blocked duct and alsop to check latching on correctly and that baby wasn?t pinching the nipple slightly. If not gone completely after a day or becomes sore or angry looking, have a quick word with your hv to be on the safe side.

The are Montgomery's tubercles Berolina and they are there to lubricate the nipple during lactation. Sometimes they 'leak' a bit too or can swell. As long is there is no associated pain then the redness is probably a transient thing not to worry about.

Sorry, berolina, that sounds as if I am critical of your worries. I am not. It is normal to worry and I don't want you to feel you can't express worries here on mumsnet. But it is also good to know when you don't have to worry
