Painful lumpy breasts 10 days after giving up BF

I stopped feeding my 1 year old 10 days ago. We were down to 1 feed a day and at first I didn't feel very uncomfortable. Yesterday I started to notice some tenderness and this morning in the shower I noticed some hard lumps under the skin. I don't feel feverish but do feel a bit naseous.

Has anyone had anything like this which has got better on its own? I'm very releuctant to see the GP as they have not been helpful with BF quesions in the past.

TIA for any advice.

Hello,

This does sounds like the beginnings of mastitis. I would try to massage out the lumps a bit and apply hot flannels to the area. If it persists you may need to speak to the doctor (believe me I know how unhelpful they can be.)

Are you still able to hand express any milk? If so relieve a bit of the pressure. Only a bit though or you will have to do this all again in a couple of days.

Good luck. Your local Breastfeeding support group may be able to help otherwise.

Thanks so much for the reply. The lumps are not so obvious today but I do feel more engorged all over and there is still some tenderness. I will see how it is in the morning an then try to see the GP before the weekend if it's worse. Thanks again.
