My friend is suffering with her 3rd episode of mastitis - baby is 3 months old. She has now decided she does want to stop breastfeeding. She has just started antibiotics for the mastitis. I am a peer supporter, adn she approached me for suggestions of how to stop - I suggested continued feeding/expressing until the mastitis has cleared up, then gradual weaning - expressing enough for her to feel comfortable. However, she just called me to say that her health visitor told her NOt to express at all and just to stop. She now has swollen, lumpy breasts and is in pain. Surely this is the worst thing for someone with mastitis?
Anyway, if I am correct does anyone have any links to any info I can send her that says she should continue expressing? thank you

I think your advice sounds correct.

Did a quick google & got these if they are any help?

See what you think.

I'm not an expert but surely the HV must be nuts and never have breastfed herself?!

Your advice sounds great, everything I have ever read about mastitis says to feed as often as possible, so she should definitely follow your advice.

I'm no good at links, but www.Kellymom.com has a great section on mastitis which talks about carrying on feeding during mastitis, which should encourage her to feed/express to stop it getting worse.
