Jekyll and Hyde baby at 4 weeks

My 4 week old son seems to have turned into Jekyll and Hyde in the night, starting night feeds peacefully enough, and then after about ten minutes screaming as if he hasn't eaten for weeks, but then spitting my boob out after about 3 sucks (which can be a bit painful).

Does this mean he is full? Too tired to feed? I am not sure whether to keep offering him my breast, or to try to put him to back to sleep.... Then of course he wakes up again in another hour (or less) and does the same thing again, or even appears to be asleep altogether, not really feeding.

He seems to feed okay during the day, though the period until around 11 is quite confused.

Any tips on what I can do? Co-sleeping is not really a viable option as I don't think it would be safe in our bed.
