is this an appropriate wieght gain for 8 week old???

hi ds2 8 weeks old and was wieghed 2 weeks ago today and was 12lb1 and today at postnatal check wieghed in at 12lb8, he was previously gaining allot more than that and was born at 8lb9. He is just bf and feeds often/on demand but as health clinic is almost a week away i dont want 2 be sat worrying if hes gaining enough wieght all week, does this sound ok to you or is it not enough?

If he is generally content and producing plenty of wet and pooey nappies then don't worry. Babies grow in spurts. Hang on a minute! My ds is 7 weeks on sunday, he weighed 8lb8oz at birth and 2 weeks ago he weighed 11lb 3oz. Your baby weighs more than mine for dates. Go and enjoy him, no more stressing tonite please

thankyou kitkat i dont know why im stressing about it hes not my 1st! hes generally alert, happy and smiley and making all the cutesey noises just as a baby that has gained 8oz+ in previous weeks didnt know if i should be worrying

You're weighing him far more often than current guidance, redsofas - your HV should be explaining this to you. Healthy babies do not need to be weighed more often than monthly in the first six months - weekly is WAY over the top, and has no clinical value whatsoever, and can cause worry and unnecessary anxiety.

It would be fine not to weigh him again for ages

ds has been weighed 4 times in his life, and he is 11mo

My DS was born 10 weeks ago at 8.9. This week he was 9.9 so I wouldn't worry

i was very much an over-wiegher of ds1 i know now, used to get him wieghed at LEAST every 2 weeks for 1st 5 months or so will just have to make sure i dont bug the health centre so much this time round

Redsofas, I am the same with the frequent weighing I have had all 4 of mine weighed weekly for the 1st few months. I know its not to guidelines but it makes me happy.

I had a deal with my HV the 1st time round that I would continue to b/feed every week that she agreed to weigh my babe, if it all started to go wrong ie baby losing lots of weight then I would rethink the feeding. I never did need to rethink the feeding or change what I was doing. If anything the frequent weighing made me far more confident and secure in the ability of my boobs to nourish my child. At the time all the other babies in the family had ben f/f and I was under a lot of pressure to do the same. Every time I was given a comment about whether or not I was doing the right thing I would whip out the red book and show the interfeering relative the chart

I haven't had this one weighed for 2 weeks but I will be in on tuesday to have him weighed, because I want to I don't have any worries about his weight but I do love to see what he has gained and it is a minor reassurance as I'm dual feeding this time and some days ds1 feeds more than others.

Don't stress, but if you want to get him weighed then do

thanks kitkat i think that i kind of have the same issue as you in that can my boobies really be making him grow healthy and strong?! i know it worked for ds1 but just because you're already a parent doesn't mean you're 100% certain of what to do with every little thing for subsequent babies! i will get him wieghed this week but i have a feeling hes put on quite a bit this week as he has been VERY hungry!
