DS has just cut a TOP tooth - reassure me about feeding...

DS is 7 mths, cut his bottom two teeth several weeks ago, he has scraped me with them a couple of times and that was bad enough!

Today his top front tooth has come through and I am feeling very nervous about carrying on.

Am I being silly? Was considering stopping anyway, but this might push me over the edge!

Don't panic. I fed dd1 till she had almost all her teeth and it was fine. I think I got bitten once or twice when she was teething - must have been with one of her first few I think. But apart from that I had no problems at all.

Dd2 recently cut her first top tooth and so far I haven't felt a thing.

We went through this a few months ago.

DD is now 11 months and has 7 teeth and we're still bf'ing. She has bitten me badly a few times (drawn blood-OUCH!)

But when she does I just take her off the boob and tell her firmly No!

I've chosen to accept as just one of those things, not worthy of stopping breastfeeding when it's been such a positive rewarding experience.

Obviously it's your decision to make as to how you feel about it.

My dd is 2.3 and has all of her teeth. 20 is it? Never bitten me, she just adjusts her latch.

My ds has all his too and I don't feel a thing.

He nipped me a couple of times when he was younger, but IIRC, it was when he was teething.

Don't worry, he shouldn't bite during a feed, he'll be too busy . If he's just feeding for comfort and he tries to nibble, take him off and give him something hard to bite like a teething toy.

I was nervous too about feeding a baby with teeth but DD has only nibbled me a couple of times and nothing too bad.

DD has bitten me a few times and its not as bad as you think (not saying it doesnt hurt but not the nightmares I had about it).

I find that they tend to bite you once and never do again. The first time she did it I screamed, she burst into tears and I had to spend ages consoling her .

You get used to looking out for the signs that a feed is coming to an end as that is when they tend to bite if they want to. DS used to think it was funny sometimes when he was over a year but didnt really bite that hard.

Teething they do sometimes...sometimes you need to adjust the latch a bit if it rubs.

Generally though its fine

Daffodilly, DD1 was the only one to draw blood one me and that was her father's fault - she was dropping off to sleep at the end of a feed, he came in and slammed the door and the poor little mite nearly jumped out of her skin and bit me at the same time. All 3 of my DDs started teething at 5 months, so had teeth for quite a lot of our bfeeding time

If he does bite you, your instinct will be to pull him off your breast - do NOT do this, as it will hurt. If you can maintain the presence of mind, pull his face in tightly to your breast. You'll block his nose and he'll open his mouth to breath and therefore let go of your poor maltreated nipple.

Another one saying don't worry, the latch will adjust, I don't remember being bitten at all and DS had teeth from 4 months.

BTW, if you do want to take him off, you can also slide your little finger in the side to break the latch first before taking him off, but I think Poledra's tip works better.

Sorry to hijak post! Was just reading with interest because I'm at exactly the same stage.

DS has 'nipped' me a couple of times with bottom teeth, but usually at the end of a feed when he was a bit... er... bored? He actually looked at me as if to see what my reaction would be!

I usually do the sliding the finger in thing, but will try and remember to do the nose blocking thing if he ever really clamps down.

DS only nipped me if I was trying to persuade him to stay on a bit longer than I wanted, so I could MN a bit more finish my important business.

I had a couple of 'nips' from ds and he was extremely amused by my reaction! Hope this doesn't spell trouble!
