i have been reading this and there is a bit where it suggests that for a baby over 3m (or might have been 4) if you don't want to supplement with formula if you're out at work or anyhting then you should ask your doctor about giving some mashed banana instead.

it made me

what's that abpout then?

How old is the edition?

thisisyesterday · 13/07/2009 20:46

it#s the seventh edition, which i thought was the most current?

Ooh yes, just found it in mine which is the 1988 edition.

Thats quite surprising - I never really noticed it before but makes me a bit too.

bubbleymummy · 13/07/2009 21:39

Oh dear - I haven't seen that in mine - 7th edition too - whereabouts? v strange considering they've been saying to start weaning 'around' 6 months since before the gov guidelines came in. I wouldn't consider 4 months to be in that bracket

thisisyesterday · 13/07/2009 21:47

well yeh, that's what I thought was odd. it seems to go against everything else they say.

and as much as I really don't want to use formula, i think i would use that in preference to weaning that early.

maybe i will ask about it at the next LLL meeting I go to. i will try and find where it is again in mine

alex7715 · 13/07/2009 22:34

well i woulnt want to wean at 3 months but i would rather a banna than formula yeah xxxx

CharCharGabor · 13/07/2009 22:35

I'm sure Jack Newman advised solids if a mother couldn't pump enough milk when they returned to work, which in America would be before 6 months. Not something I would be keen on personally though, so young.

thisisyesterday · 14/07/2009 08:55

well, much as I dislike formula manufacturers, and would avoid using it frm a purely political viewpoint, i very much think it's more appropriate nourishment for my baby from 3-6 months than mashed banana.

The advice was very different when I had my son in 1997. He was regularly on plain mashed fruit and veg at 4 months (alongside breast milk). He responded to it quite nicely tbh! Slept a bit longer and a bit less pukey.

In fact I remember that he had his first (tiny) spoonful of mashed banana at around 3.5 months, with the support of the health visitor.

Not sure how I'll approach it this time, but still pregnant so one step at a time !

blinder · 17/07/2009 16:46

By the way, he's 12 now and a rugby player. Must've been all those carbs.

lol xxxx
