screaming and kicking during breast feeding - frazzled baby and mother

oh my god - over the last three days this has got worse and worse. She feeds well for about 7 minutes then starts griping around and coming off and then on. Then she starts kicking out and eventually she starts screaming.

So i take her off, sit her up and rub her back. She then throws herself back as if she wants to go back on the breast. I put her back on and she strts screaming again.

she is 1 month old and gaining weight so i'm not worried she isn't getting enough. But i need to nip this behaviour in the bud asap as I can't do another 5 months of this!

Any suggestions?

PS how do you know if your baby has reflux?

do you manage to get a burp up when you try and wind her?
if not keep trying and see if she brings it up, regardless of how much flapping she does!

other things to consider though:

thrush: check her mouth for whiteness. do your breasts feel ok?

do you have a fast letdown? does she struggle with the amount of milk?

I am having the same problem with my 9 month old baby girl. She was great until 4 days ago and now she pushes away from me getting very upset in the process. I dont know what to do and is quite upsetting

feeling like crying!

If a baby has acid reflux, can you give them a drop of gaviscon to settle it?

The baby does usually burp - i'm pretty sure it's not wind.

I also son't think i have fast let down either as she has seemed to cope with it up until now.

You can by drops for baby called Infacol, this is great for reflux.

thisisyesterday · 07/07/2009 21:14

sometimes they just do it, and you never figuyre out why tbh.
my 3 week old is doing a similar thing, but not at all feeds thankfully.

i think if it was reflux she'd have been like it from the start though? but i don't know that much about it.
if you suspect it though you should see the GP. they can prescribe baby gaviscon.

infacol won't do anything for proper reflux, in fact, there are many doubts over whether it is any more effective than water even for colic-symptoms

Gripe water - you can give it to a 1mo. I found it great for wind and just to settle an acid tummy which I felt my DS suffered from.

LCRNK · 07/07/2009 21:20

I am only going on my own experience with infacol. Not for every baby. Just a suggestion to help.

Are you sure your LO is still hungry? Mine screamed like this for a couple of weeks (which I put down to a fast letdown) until I figured it meant he was tired and wanted to be put down.

Reflux can be a problem at any time but in the early days is pretty typical. The arching and screaming sound pretty characteristic. Get ye to the GP! It's really tiring so don't let it go on too long without getting her checked out.

My 5 Week old is the same. He is wonderful during the day. He has a bath at 7 then I will start feeding him. Usually within 10 mins into the feed he starts screaming uncontrollably. He goes red and kicks and slaps his hands. I sit him up, wind him, walk around with him but he wont settle. If He is on my shoulder he head butts me which usually means he wants feeding but when I put him back on the breast he starts screaming again.

sometimes after a couple of hours he eventually goes back on the breast and within a minute is asleep, and can sleep upto 4 hours.

Other times he falls asleep screaming and then wakes up an hour later, calm and ready for a feed before he goes in his cot.

This only happens between 7pm-1am. Every other BF he is content and sleepy afterwards.

Any advice would be great,
