6 month old - decreasing his milk intake quite drastically - what should I do?

DS2 has been having 36oz of milk for weeks now - he always drains a 9oz bottle and has been having 4 a day.

Now he is only having 6-7oz of his bottles and maybe 3 or 4oz of his 7pm bottle but he is hardly eating any food so it can't be that he is full from food.

Today he had a couple of mouthfuls of porridge/fruit puree, he gummed a pitta bread to death at lunch time but didn't really eat much and then had literally a few mouthfuls of tea.

He seems happy enough, is still sleeping through (although he only had 2oz of his bottle tonight so not sure if he will tonight )

He did have a cold last week which coincided with the drop in milk - which is what I thought it was - but he is fine again now but still not drinking very much.

Any thoughts?

A minimum of 20oz is recommended from 6 months - is your lo still reaching that amount?

Ceebee74 · 24/05/2009 20:55

Yes I think so - he actually probably has about 24-28oz so quite a bit over.

The amount of food he has is nowhere near enough to compensate for the drop in milk though Surely he must be hungry??

If he's not waking for it and isn't taking more then he can't be that hungry for it. Could you include more milk/dairy in his solids to try and up his intake?

Ceebee74 · 24/05/2009 21:04

Lol - I would do that if I thought it would be worthwhile but as he isn't really interested in food and only has a few very small mouthfuls, it is not going to make much difference.

Ah well, not a lot I can do anyway as I can't force him to drink his milk

are you on the fastest teat? Have you tried a different milk? If neither of them work then you will just have to accept he doesnt want to drink as much milk any more.

I went through this with DS when he was about 7 months. He is breastfed, but he really lost interest in milk for a couple of weeks when we were introducing foods. I started to give him water with his meals and didn't worry too much about the milk - will he eat yoghurt?

I wouldn't worry too much, especially as he is still having plenty of milk, albeit not as much as you are used to him taking.
If he is anything like DS then after a while he will be more interested in milk again.
