I stopped sterilising bottles at around 3-4 months! Do you really need a steriliser at 6 months?

littleboyblue · 19/05/2009 20:34

I use the avent microwave steam steriliser with dr brown bottles, and had no problems at all.
Will you not sterilise up to a year? Can you look on e-bay or somewhere for one?

mad4myboys · 19/05/2009 20:37

i stopped sterilising with ds1 when he stopped using bottles, around 9 months.... i thought you had to up till 1 year due to using bottles for milk?

Try cold water sterilising. We used it as with ds1 the instructions with my hired breast pump required that rather than any other method. You can buy tablets or liquid in the supermarket, and you just need a plastic container - 2nd time round we found one for £1 in Poundland.

If you can get to London, I've got one I don't want. Avent express steam jobbie.

Stinkyfeet · 19/05/2009 21:13

No need to sterilise!

misdee · 19/05/2009 21:13

you dont need to sterlise.

just wash in hot soapy water, rinse in hot water, and leave to air dry on a clean tea towel/paper towel IIRC.

will find the thread.

misdee · 19/05/2009 21:13

stinkyfeet got there first lol

PlumBumMum · 19/05/2009 21:14

I'm nearly sure I read somewhere if you wash bottles in dishwasher you don't need to sterlise, can't remember what age from

i thought about dishwasher but ours is pretty crap. stuff on the top shelf quite often gets covered in gritty stuff so you have to hand wash it after. it also stains clear plastic orange... i dont want skanky looking bottles!!!

If a product is faulty, you have a legal right to return it for a full refund, repair or replacement - the only problem is being a branded product some stores would want proof that you bought it from them.

My MIL is fantastic at taking things back and say she bought from mothercare and they didnt take it back she would try another branch or even store say John Lewis - cheeky!

I also had 2 sterilisers in less than 6 months so ended up sterilising in an ice-cream tub with milton tablets. By the time i was weaning DS i would just sterilise his bottles once in a while as you dont need to sterilise once they are eating and putting things into their mouths themselves.

jellybeans · 20/05/2009 10:08

Tesco do a microwave one for £5 it's great you can get loads in.

KingCanuteIAm · 20/05/2009 10:10

I would just wash with hot soapy water myself, sterilisers are just another way to cash in on us paranoid brits, very few people use them other than us!

QOD · 20/05/2009 10:12

I had a second hand avent, the element went, I rang them and they replace it free of charge (I had to pay postage to send back)
Perfect! and passed it on again too LOL

mummypig · 20/05/2009 10:13

if you still want to sterilise after reading the info i would (a) take the steriliser back and point out it is "not fit for purpose" or (b) look on Freecycle as i have noticed loads of sterilisers offered in our area.

sounds like your dishwasher needs looking at! I had someone round to fix a different problem in ours, and he also cleaned out some bits that were out of reach so wouldn't get cleaned normally. It works much better now.

codinbatter · 20/05/2009 10:14

My avent steriliser is still going strong. I bought it for DD's bottles 18 years ago.

codinbatter · 20/05/2009 10:15

he he
Before you all accuse me of being bonkers ... I use it to sterilise jamjars.

KingCanuteIAm · 20/05/2009 10:19

You ar still bonkers
