9 month old feeds 10-12 times in 24 hours, is that ok for this age?

I thought it would get less when we started on food. Its no less at all! Sometimes more than half of these feeds are during the night.

Is this normal for this age?

it's fine if you don't mind it
the night feeds will eventually lessen - probably
you might try gentle ways of getting back to sleep without feeding, if the night feeds are bothering you? but it is tricky i know without lots of upset
basically it is a good way to get comfort and it's good IMO that you are feeding on cue
if however you start to feel overwhelmed then you could think about cutting down

My 11 month old was similar, she still feeds v frequently but is down to every 4-5 hours now. It's hard but will get better- hopefully!

anything and everything is normal for the breastfed baby I think!
ds2 was certainly feeding at least that often at 9 months

Mine was feeding 4 times at that age (as I replaced the bfs with breakfast, lunc hand dinner etc) but as Franny says its only a problem if you dont mind it and if you want to cut down then you can either introduce a routine based around the solid meals or try and feed less at night.

No I dont mind it and he dont really wake up, unless I try and leave him, then he just goes into one. So its just as easy to pick him up and feed him. Then pop him back down again.

I just thought it should be alot less feeds now, just not sure whats normal. But then this must just be normal for him I guess.

Just in case you're still wondering, it's normal. My dd is 23 months and sometimes feeds every couple of hours during the day, sometimes only in a morning or in an evening. Sometimes a lot throughout the night, sometmes not at all.

If, like me, you're happy to go with it, it's fine.

Divvy · 02/05/2009 21:09

I have put in the 3 meals a day, but with no reduction in bf's on his part.

I also am starting to worry that, he may still be having night feeds forever now!

I cant refuse night feeds, as its how he is settled back to sleep, and I feel he is hungry at night, and these are nice big feeds he is having...is this a bad thing? At this age?

His day feeds, unless tired, are mostly taken with lots of messing about, coming off and going back on again, after noseing around at whats going on!

Gosh night feeds are fine, nay expected imo. Because, as you say, they mess about during the day. Plus they're thirsty and still want comfort, sometimes teething. He'll most likely stop you know, when he's ready. And you can gently encourage when or if you need/want to.

Honestly, if you're happy to do it, it's absolutely normal.

Divvy · 02/05/2009 21:18

I am happy, but tired! lol

I think I also pick him up quickly at night, as dont want to wake his sister in the next room who is 2!

As long as he does stop, and I dont have to do some sort of weaning off stage.

He'll stop and I dare say he'll be all the happier and more confident because you've responded so well to his needs.

It's bloody tiring I know, but don't worry, it'll pass before you know it.

Thanks for your support, everyone

He will probably go 4 hours later tonight, and I will be thinking what a fuss I have made

He slept through until he was 5 months, and its been like this since then.

Another thing...My periods came back at 6 weeks, as he wasnt feeding at night. Can fertility reverse again, with feeding at night again?

Oh guess what?

He went from 10pm-4pm-7pm!

I feel refreshed, even if he dont do it again for a while!
