Anyone want to sell me their Silverettes?

Am due in 3 wks and with previous 2 DC's suffered with horribly sore/cracked nips. So am getting ready for more of the same this time round and have been hearing great things about Silverettes. Anyone have some they'd like to sell to me? (I could buy them online but they are £29.99) but are apparently only £10 if you buy them at the Baby Show (which I can't go to - boo). Also any feedback on them would be gratefully recieved. Many thanks.

I've not seen any evidence on the effectiveness of silvrettes. Tbh, if you want to avoid soreness, the best thing to do is to make contact with your local bf experts antenatally, read up everything you can about bf (hang out on www.kellymom.com) and call in the bf cavalry at the first sign of even the tiniest problem. Most soreness is caused by the way a baby feeds from the breast (latch). Often, it is very easily fixed, with the right expert help and support.

grendle I realise that soreness is most probably down to getting the right latch but I've had babies with tongue tie so the right latch was probably pretty impossible (although the midwife and hv both told me my latch was perfect!) - am just trying to get one step ahead this time! I do also think that having been very very sore with 2 babies I'm one of those people that gets sore (even from 10 mins expressing).

Hi

I could sell you mine. Only used them once as nipples werent cracked, only sore at feeding times. All seems better now so happy to pass them on.

frazzledoldbag · 29/04/2009 12:09

Hi ladydivine - that would be great. I can send you either a cheque or paypal the money to you if you prefer? How much would you like for them?

Hi- I absolutely heart my silverettes (from Breastfeeding Heaven in a sale at £15) so I will not part with them I'm afraid- they are polished and awaiting next DC!

I agree with Grendle that a) there is no evidence to support their use and b) the vast majority of bf ishoos are due to positioning/attachment probs. Nipples are meant to heal very quickly once said issues are sorted.

However I had a bad latch, that, coupled with severe thrush, resulted in a deeeeep crack that I had for months. No exaggeration. It was hell on earth. Because I knew it was a latch problem I left it far far too long before my thrush was diagnosed. So the crack didn't heal, even with my latch fixed, because of the thrush. In step the Silverettes and within a week it was gone. It was a last resort for an unusual situation but it worked.

Actually I thought it was probably a load of mumbo jumbo so I taped a silver ring on the crack overnight to see if it was worth shelling out the money for the Silverettes and noticed such a dramatic difference I bought them.

Having discussed them with a microbiologist friend she saw the idea behind it (silver being antibacterial etc). They don't stop cracks and will only help heal once the reason for trauma is addressed. Anyway, they helped me no end. But as I say my situation is far from the norm (thank god!)

HTH

Thanks MamacitaGordita that's really useful info and I'm glad they helped you. Good luck with the next DC!

i had a deep crack in my nipple which the gp precribed daktarin for which just made it worse. I was in agony for weeks till I gt silverettes. It was my second baby and very late into breastfeeding so don't think it was latch. Anyway after wearing silverettes for about 3 days it had healed. Don't want t part with them I'm afraid but heard about them on MN and very grateful!
