My neighbours baby born 2 days ago, latched on after birth, but since then is not latching, crying & fussing at the breast, has not fed for a number of hours, mum done lots of skin to skin, but baby is just not latching. rooting, but not latching

am not sure what else to advise, mum says her nipples are too soft but not inverted. can't get over to see her as i have sprained my ankle and am housebound for the next few days

she has tried phoning NCT but no joy

baby jaundiced but not massively so

mum did have a PPH a few hours post birth, but all settled now

could do with some quick top tips to calm baby and mum and get her latched again

thanks so much

Try La Leche League, they are really good. They helped me when I had trouble BFing, and they even helped my friend by sending a BFing councillor to her house for free.

when she said she had tried phoning the nct did she not get through or were they not very helpful - if she didnt get through I would suggest trying again as I imagine they are often busy.

Has she tried getting into the bath with the baby - sounds mad but sometimes helps with latching. Nice warm water, skin to skin and baby chest to chest and nose to nipple.

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 06/04/2009 18:45

message was to try again later. she will try again. but needs to try to feed in mean time.

has had skin to skin , have suggested bath , not sure if she has done so, she went to bed all afternoon with baby for skin to skin and no joy

Has she tried expressing some milk onto the nipple for the baby to smell? Presumably her milk hasnt come in yet? You can hand express colostrum and feed it in using a syringe or some such if she has anything to hand.

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 06/04/2009 18:50

yes, she has tried expressing colostrum and baby taken it. just struggling to get her to latch for a feed.
