OK - truth - when did you wean off the bottle

I breast fed exclusively for 6 mos, mixed for another four, so quit at 10 months. DD is good eater and drinks from cups during the day but from a bottle first thing in AM and last thing before bed.

THE BOOKS are saying baby should be weaned off bottle now but I am guessing nobody actually does this surely? Especially for the bedtime feed?

When did you become completely bottle free - be honest!

We had done it by one year but are in the minority amongst friends. It was only becasue ds wasn't very 'sucky'. Pretty much everything else we have been later - he only moved into a big bed last night at the age of 2.7 and he is nowhere near being potty trained.

..and tbh I don't think it is worth worrying about. Few are off the bedtime bottle by one year. As I say, we were in the minority.

Ds1 is 2.4 years and still has a bottle of milk at bedtime.

Dd1 was about 2, twins were about 2 and dd4 was nearly 3.

I am in no rush to stop the milk but never give juice in bottle

dd is 3 and still has her morning bottle of milk ... We have tried and failed to get her off it . She drinks happily during teh day from cus / beakes / straws etc !!

magnolia74 · 23/03/2009 21:08

Also I breast fed ds1 until he was 2 but he started a night bottle at 18m

Babbity · 23/03/2009 21:09

I weaned them both off bottles and onto beakers by 12 months (but DS1 continued BFing until 3.5, and DS2 is still BFed at 15m)

LadyPinkofPinkerton · 23/03/2009 21:13

DS1 - 11 months

DS2 - 13 months

Dd was 10 months but my ds is 2.8 and still has a bottle of milk morning and night, he wont give it up.

I bf dd until 18 months but she would have a bottle of cows milk if I was out (usually once a week at least). I think she was also around 18 months when she pulled the teat out of her bottle and poured all the milk in her bed. Twice in one night. So we ditched all the bottles and gave her a cup. She was fine as long as she got her milk!

callmeovercautious · 23/03/2009 21:23

DD BF at bedtime until a few months ago - she is 2.5 now. She never really had bottles but I see a link between the 2 as comfort objects. However she often still drinks a cup of milk at bedtime.

I don't see any harm in a cup/bottle/boob for years tbh. As long as it is a bedtime drink by 2/3yrs and not a sleep tool.

Flum · 23/03/2009 21:25

My dd2 drank from a bottle until ds was born soooo 2 and half. Only put her on a beaker then so wouldn't dh wouldn't get confused with bottles as ds has bottles from time to time.

So now she has a beaker for morning and evening bed drinks like her 5 year old sister!!! Saves spillages I say and its cosy coz they can cuddle up with sippy cups.

FAQinglovely · 23/03/2009 21:26

DS2 was about 2 1/2yrs old when he stopped having his night time milk in a bottle.

DS3 is 22 months and still has 3 bottles a day

Bellebelle · 23/03/2009 21:30

DD1 - 2yrs
Hope to get DD2 off bottles earlier but the bedtime bottle seems to be difficult to drop.

Washersaurus · 23/03/2009 21:34

Neither of my boys have ever had a bottle, but DS1 who is 4 in July still has drinks from a sippy/spout type cup. I think if your DD is using cups in the day she will adjust to drinking her milk from them at night/in the morning fairly quickly.

Saying that, I am still bf DS2 at 19mo in the morning and evening because even if I give him a cup of milk, he'd rather have milk from me (but I think that is a different issue)

DC1 was just under 2
DC2 is 2 and I'm thinking about it
