i haven't had any nipple soreness breastfeeding dd until now. Suddenly last night it became very painful to breastfeed her on one side, just the nipple itself is sore, not the breast. Could it be thrush? the nipple itself is bright pink. DD has been unsettled lately, wondering if she has oral thrush but have not seen any signs.

I think it's definitely a possibility. Bright pink nipple and sudden onset soreness can suggest thrush.
Have either of you been on antibiotics?

Another cause of soreness at this stage could be pregnancy.

Could also be a latch change caused by teething but I would definitely consider thrush.

I would make an appointment with the doctor. The breastfeeding network leaflet on thrush can be useful to take along:

thanks SJm. Not pregnant! I have had antibiotic eye drops don't know if that is enough to cause thrush. Made an appt to see doc. Hope it is nothing horrible..
