Is it strange for your milk supply to just suddenly dramatically increase??

DS is 12 1/2 months old, BF still going strong. He's a little milk monster [fond mummy emoticon]. He was almost exclusively breast-fed until over 9 mos, and is now eating solids, not a huge amount but it seems adequate, and nurses several times a day and throughout the night. (We co-sleep.) He last nursed this morning around 6 am, then I had to get up and go to work. It's now 1:30 pm in my time zone, I have just finished work and desperately needed to pump. So I did and I pumped 5 1/2 ounces (nearly 170 mL) from my left breast !!! The right was fairly prolific too (4 oz/ 120 mL) but I was gobsmacked when I filled the Medela storage bottle on the left.

I normally get 3-4 oz per breast when I pump during/ after work. Eating habits haven't changed.

At first I thought I could go home and pump there but then realized my boobs were so full they hurt and had to pump before leaving work.
What could cause this huge increase? I mean, I'm not complaining, but wow. Any ideas???

Has your DS been hungrier than normal? Could be your body responding to what it thinks he needs?

I thought I was going to have to (grudgingly) accept the title of threadkiller of the week...

We're now on day 3 of DS nursing as usual and me having to pump milk off once a day. I have no idea what's going on. Last night before bed DH looked at me in my nightie and started laughing (cue me looking ) and said, "wow, you're lopsided!!". Which was true. I had boulder boob on the right side and normal boob on the left.

Curious, very curious. But as I said, I'm not complaining, I just want to know what's going on!

Won't the pumping just make it worse though? I think there is some info on Kellymom about oversupply and what you can do to get things under control a bit.

We had bad latch at a feed yesterday and I've got one cracked nipple so just feeding from one side while it heals - so I'm right there with you on the lopsided boobs!

I may be making it worse by pumping but I can't not pump, it's so uncomfortable!
On the upside we will have lots of boobie milk frozen for the future.

Weird though.
