Thrush - anyone tried grapefruit seed extract? or should i go straight for fluconazole ?

Hi there

I have thrush in my breasts (deep shooting pain after feeding) after bf for 3 weeks. My baby hasnt yet developed any symptons but we are both being treated just in case.

Has anyone tried grapefruit seed extract and had success on it? the doctor has prescribed fluconazole , as well daktarin for my nipples and for DS.

Should I give the grapefruit seed a go before I try the fluconazole? I dont want to get to the stage where my baby is in pain, but am reluctant to go on the fluconazole straight away as it gets into the breast milk.

any advice much appreciated.

sorry not tried the seed extract but have had fluconazole and it's fast acting. IMO it was more important to heal the thrush than risk a bit of the medicine in my milk - can always pump or supplement short term if it's something you're very concerned about?

hi

thanks for your replies. its so hard to know what to do isnt it.

I think i will take both the fluconazole and the GFSE as, as you say, its more important to get it sorted. though its odd as i havent had the breast pains for the last couple of evenings - and only started using the creams today. i wonder what is going on? makes me think maybe i should only use the GFSE (i know i am changing my mind every 2 minutes!) for the time being?

I really struggled with BF my DD last time round due to thrush and ended up supplementing then finally stopping. it hasnt got to that point yet this time but i am nervous it may end up the same way.

I would use the fluconazole if you have it

I used GFSE and it worked very well for me

Try the lot at once! I had a long nightmare with thrush and flucanazole, and ended up using fluc, daktarin gel for baby's mouth, and me using daktarin cream, acidophilus, grapefruitseed, AND a sugar-free diet for a month. Finally worked...

(thank the gods for sugar-free chocolate...)

great - thanks

will use both!

Yup I'm with notcitrus and kazbeth- bring it on with the treatments. I'm on my third lot of fluconazole/daktarin cream/gel and have just started with GFSE (liquid and tablets), acidophilus and sugar free diet. If you leave it it can really take root. Go the whole hog!

will do!
