blocked duct- massive suddenly out blue at 10 months

I have a massive lump in one boob suddenly out of the blue, thnking its a blockage but it does feel huge- a good 2 inches by 2 inches. Can't think how got it now. I've been BF for 10 months and in early days had 3 episodes of blocks but they cleared up within a day but this one is huge.

My DS has been feeding fine as normal (2-3 feeds a day), any ideas why would occur now? Anything else I can do? i can also feel a small block now in other boob too!!

Going to GP tomorrow about it as it feels big and sore and it hasn't shifted at all and it's almost 24 hours. Worried mastitis as starting to feel a bit odd. Taken ibuprofen and been doing massage, heat and feeding, pumping. I just expressed but only got 1 oz whereas otherside got 3 oz.

Can't sleep now (ironic now as DS just started sleeping through all night!)

Can't help with the question why but haqve had similar when I was feeding perfectly fine up until the block.
You're right in going to the gp to check it out - I had similar with my ds1 and it hampered feeding from that side. I also then ended up having mastitis a year after stopping BFing as lump still there so def worth trying to clear asap.
Are you leaning against your breast when you feed maybe or is your ds pressing against a particular part of it?
Good luck - hope you can sort it out before it becomes mastitis.

You know what.. this morning I fed him in bed at 6 am lying down but I think I was lying too flat on back and he was kind of on top so sucking up way rather than on side properly. Don't think anything was pressing but maybe the slightly odd position with milk having to go against gravity caused it. other than that only thing can think is DS tends to put his hand on boob and press around but nothing too hard. Just feels weird to have got such a bog block now and the fact I think can feel another on other side too.

I'm frightened of mastitis!

My ds1 used to put his hand on my boob and I think that may have triggered my lump...mastitis, if you catch it early enough, is easily treated...if you start to feel flushed and have redness on your breast and it feels hot, get thee to the gp!!
Hopefully, though, with more feeding, it will ease off...don't panic! Good luck.

Thanks! Think I'll off to bed and GP tomorrow and just keep massaging away. Ta, feel better for posting!

has lump gone yet (massive sympathy here as got recurrent lump that keep having to have lanced)

Timeisablindguide · 18/02/2009 15:45

Glad you saw the gp though - it would have been a lot worse and even more painful if you'd left it. Good decision - hope it clears asap!

Lump still there no change really but I feel better knowing I am on antibiotics so hopefully should improve!? GP said definately infected. How long does that usually take to clear?

Not long - should be clear by end of the course of antibiotics so just make sure you complete the course. Good luck and hope you're better soon. I still have lump 5 yrs on but have had it checked and it's nowt but remnants of busy BFing days! Yes, the joys, eh!
