Hiya,

decided to try this.

DD has got oral thrush now, but still going to try.

Mentioned it to my HV today who said 'go for it',

She said its best to just put baby to the breast.

But think I need a pump too. But def cant afford £80 electric one

Have got cream for my nipples in case i catch the thrush.

Am going to put DD to the breast when she wakes.

Not sure about latch or anything tho

Feel a bit 'blind' about it all.

well done, i think you can't possibly regret giving it a go. have you tried a bfc or local nct, they might be able to get you a pump?

Anglepoise · 06/02/2009 14:32

I know nothing of the technicalities but just wanted to wish you huge amounts of luck

traceybath · 06/02/2009 14:32

Oh i can't offer any practical help but best of luck!

I borrowed a pump from hospital when ds2 was in NICU and am pretty sure that NCT hire them out - try them as would be less than £80 and a serious pump.

ScorpiowithabigS · 06/02/2009 14:32

Well done you

ask around for a pump, ask HV, just ask anybody! Put up a post on here maybe.

SobranieCocktail · 06/02/2009 14:32

Lots and lots of good luck to you. Really hope it works out

Re: the pump - are you sure you "need" an electric one? I personally found a hand pump much more effective (although I wasn't trying to relactate). Can you borrow one from the hospital? I'm sure I knew people who did this where I lived.

Jackstini · 06/02/2009 14:34

Goog luck Dis & well done for trying this - if you type relactation into Google there is loads of info

Disenchanted3 · 06/02/2009 14:37

maybe ill just buy a hand pump.

just tried to put her to the breast, couldn't get her to latch, she fell asleep, lol.

will try again when she wakes.

get naked on your top half with her in a vest so your skin is touching, just stay like that with her all weekend if you can - a babymoon.

TrinityRhino · 06/02/2009 14:41

just use your hand to express

stay top halff naked and with baby all weekend
relax and believe that you can do it

HUGE HUGS AND GOOD LUCK

Olihan · 06/02/2009 14:49

I think if you really want to be able to produce a decent amount of milk then you need to be putting her to the breast as often as possible AND expressing from both breasts at least every 3 hours, including through the night. The night feeds/expressings are the most important in terms of supply because your hormone levels are higher then.

I would get in touch with one of the bf helplines to get some advice about latch and positioning as they are crucial for the baby to be able to effectively remove any milk that you make. Obviously the more she takes, the more your supply will increase so getting that part right is half the battle won.

Good Luck!

ditto everything Olihan said.

I would really, really recommend an electric pump though. to get your supply up you need the best possible equipment, and very regular pumping day and night.

if you can't afford to buy one then contact your local branch of NCT.. they hire them out.

check out kellymom too, for advice on getting baby back on the breast

thisisyesterday · 06/02/2009 14:58

kellymom on relactation

Disenchanted good for you.

My ds was on bottles untill he was 5 weeks old, it was alot off work to get him to bf , he was mixed fed for a few weeks and he is now ebf.
this is what help me latch him on.

You may need 2 pepole for this. if your sit comfy with no top half on, hold your dc as is you want to latch her on , get the person sat next to you to hold a bottle as close to your breast as poss ,feed about 1oz to her then take the bottle out and try to latch her on , it took maybe 1 or 2 trys for me and my ds latched on, let her feed for as long as she wants then give her the rest off the bottle, try that for a few feeds and eventually dont offer the bottle first and see if she will latch on with out it, my ds feeds got longer and longer on the breast, when i was confident i weaned him from the bottle.

I hope that makes sense.

lollyheart · 06/02/2009 16:08

Oh i never used a pump at all , i got most out by hand expressing.

Lulumama · 06/02/2009 16:11

try feeding her in the bath

good on you, i wish i had know all this when i had DD

hope it all works out

Disenchanted3 · 06/02/2009 18:13

Hiya,

Ive just been to see a breasfeeding counsellor

She showed me how to latch and DD did it!! She latched on, had about 3 sucks and fell asleep on the breast.

I know it sounds daft but even that makes me proud because I have anxiety issues and still managed to be brave and go see her, even phoning was hard for me, lol.

Ive hired a hospital grade pump from her too so am going to start that when DH has put the kids to bed.

lollyheart - thats brilliant! EBF! wow, im just aiming for a bit of milk, lol.
