Anti-inflammatory drugs and breastfeeding - are they ok?

I'm bf my 8 month old ds2 twice a day now and am seeing a physio because of ongoing pelvic problems.

My physio would like me to take a strongish (her words) dose of anti inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen or similar) for a couple of weeks to see if this helps the problem to settle.

Do any of you wise ladies know if this is ok to do?

Good info here, but looks like all are ok

After the birth of my son I had a nasty tear (which subsequently became infected and very painful), I was prescribed Diclofenac (a stronger anti-inflammatory than Nurofen).
I was taking this stuff for weeks and B/F at the same time and hosp docs and my GP all said continue.

Confirm with your GP obviously, but I think Nurofen would do you a lot of good (also have pelvic probs) and shouldn't interfere too much.
If you are really concerned and would like to try a narural, alternative anti-inflammatory, I can recommend these. I take them when pregnant and when my stomach has needed a break from the hardcore stuff.

Great - Thank you both so much.

I might try to get some diclofenac from my GP. I've never struggled with tummy trouble but will bear in mind the natural alternative if I start struggling.

I knew somebody on here would be able to help

Well I asked in Boots today and the pharmacist said no to taking any anti inflammatory medication while bf.

Holland and Barrett also said no to anything "alternative" while bf too.

Seems like I'll have to wait until I've finished feeding ds2.

Has anyone else got any experience of this?

What drugs in particular did your physio recommend you take?

LackaDAISYcal · 09/02/2009 21:00

ibuprofen is fine
and according to lactmed stonger anti-inflammatories like diclofenac are fine too.

The breastfeeding network's drugline is good if you want to hear confirmation from the horse's mouth.

Pharmacists, like other HCPs aren't always totally clued up on BFing. They look in the book and it says No because no trials have been done due to ethics so they tell you No.

Call the BfN tomorrow or ask your GP to call them if he is reluctant to prescribe anything.

ibuprofen fine - I used it all the time when I had mastitis.

Novmama · 09/02/2009 21:01

Was prescribed diclofenac after c/s and was given addtional supply once home by my gp to cope with pain and was bf all that time so obviously ok.

BfN was linked by cmot earlier in your thread...their number is on there somewhere.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 10/02/2009 10:23

Just called the BfN and spoke to a lovely lady who clarified that it was fine to take ibuprofen and gave me good evidence and reasons why.

She also directed me to this site which is very useful. I'm going to politely point my GP in the direction of this website!

It's too easy for GP's and pharmacists to say no without really looking into it. I wouldn't be asking them if there wasn't a good reason for taking them!

Thanks everybody for your input
