ds is 21months. I had an awful start with tongue tie/ thrush/ white nipple. oh the pain! I cried, he cried, dh despaired... it didn´t settle down til about 10 weeks. I can´t believe I ended up feeding for so long. It´s been a beautiful and rewarding experience for both of us but now it´s all done.

Over the last couple of nights I´ve reduced the last feed to only a quick 5 mins and tonight he´s kept up his usual on/off mantra of asking for it but I just kept saying ´not tonight, it´s all finished´ and offered him the cup of milk I´d been offering right before bed.

He didn´t complain, I am so happy there were no tears, hope that subsequent nights (once he realises that really is it) are the same and that there is no big upset. Would be really nice to finish on a happy note (or at least not a sad one)

I would never have gone this long without the support in the early days that I got on this board (though it´s been a looong time since i regularly posted on this particular topic) and want to say thank you to the many people who helped spur me on. When MIL said my milk was ´too thin´, when dh said ´just give him a bottle FGS why are you putting yourself through this?´ and many other tough times.

So thanks ´i couldn´t have done it without you´ [cheese]

Well done

Have a large glass of wine and pat yourself on the back.

ta just polished off a small and very lovely glass of very cold beer [hic] [lightweight]

Does this justify new underwear?

What a fab post! 21 months! Has made me feel a more positive about my current bf difficulties and am sure it will help others too. Thank you!

Maveta · 02/02/2009 19:59

oh i hope it does help, if that can be my small contribution to helping other mums out there struggling to bf. There IS light at the end of the (long and sometimes very dark) tunnel! It just doesn´t seem like it at times.

I don´t know how bfing will go if I get a chance to try in the future but the support on here is invaluable. lol, just looked up some old posts.. look and again! and there are more but i won´t bore you.

Good luck, it really really does get easier. eventually!

Maveta I'm the same as you- it took me about 10/12 weeks to nurse DD without pain. She ended up self-weaning at 14 months.
I felt proud and sad at the same time!

Good news is that nursing DS so far (apart from a bout of mastitis) has been a breeze! No pain, lots of cuddling and smiling and now attempts to suck his thumb and nurse at the same time.

It's all worth it IMO.
