Ongoing Breastfeeding and excessive weight gain?

I am feeding 7 month DD finger foods as she refuses to open her mouth for a spoon. She is only eating little bits but am hoping she will increase her intake at her own pace. I told my MIL that I didn't mind her not eating loads of solids as I will continue to bf her as her main source of nutrition and MIL told me that if she has too much breastmilk instead of solids she will put on excessive weight.

Please tell me this isn't true? I wish DD would eat more solids but I want her to do it in her own time.

This is the usual nonsense. Ignore.

There are lots of threads on here about BLW, in case you want more support with that.

Rubbish.

Ask your MIL where she heard this.

I wish I'd challenged her/asked her to explain it a little more at the time but instead I changed the subject and am now worrying about it. MIL intimidates me a bit plus she works with children so does tend to know a bit about modern day practices. Still does not make her an expert!

IamLeticiaDean - I get the feeling that no matter what is said here on mumsnet, this idea will niggle away at you, am I right?

In that case, I think it really will help you (or DH) to ask MIL where she got the info - not in a challenging or confrontational way, but just genuinely sharing that it has worried you.

Risks of obesity that start in infancy have been pretty thoroughly looked at - they include formula feeding, inappropriate solids especially when inappropriate solids replace milk too early. Continued bf, with a relatively slow start to solids, is not a factor.

Hope this convinces you!

I've never heard of breastfeeding as a risk factor for obesity. I have heard of it mentioned quite a lot as a protective factor.

here are some of the recent research articles on the topic

Thanks for the reassurrance. Will make sure I delve further in future!
