Breast feeding and me losing weight - is it ok?

I am still breastfeeding my DS 8.5 months, 3 times a day, morning, afternoon and bedtime, and he is a very good eater when it comes to food.

I have decided that I would like to switch him to formula for at least 1 feed but he is having none of it at the moment so I am still feeding him myself

For the last few weeks I have started going to the gym 3 times a week and this last week I have been eating very healthily, for example, oats for breakfast, tuna salad for lunch, veggie chilli with pitta bread for dinner and lots of fruit. As a result I have lost about 4 pounds this week which I am pleased about but I am a bit concerned as to whether it will affect my milk supply.

I'm not starving myself but have cut out a lot of bread and pasta. Is this ok to do this whilst breastfeeding? I just want to reclaim my body now after breastfeeding for over 8 months.

Any advice gratefully received.

You'd have to be on a total starvation diet for it to affect your breastmilk, so no problem

Oh really? Thanks for that cmotdibbler, makes me feel a lot better. I think I was worrying too cos my boobs feel a lot emptier (saggier ) now but that is probably because he is down to 3 feeds plus the after effect of having 3 children!

Me too I started eating much better 2 weeks ago and have lost 7lb so far. My ds is 7.5 months and like you I want my body back! With dd I couldn't lose any weight until I stopped bf when she was 10 months old, and then it just fell off, so I know I will get there eventually, I just don't want to have to stop feeding to do it this time. Interestingly, I did try to diet a few months ago but it seemed to really upset ds- I went pretty low carb and I do think this affected my supply. But this time it hasn't done. I don't know why?? It has no effect on my supply either, ds has been poorly recently and feeding a lot more than usual and my supply has definately increased to keep up with the demand. Good luck with it all. I soooooo wish I was one of these people who just gets skinny through bf alone, but sadly I am not

It's not a problem as cmot says.

Enjoy the added effect of the calorie muncher that is an 8month old BFing baby

Thanks, if only he would munch a few hundred more a day eh! It would be good if the baby just sucked all the excess fat out in the breastmilk!

Can't believe I have managed all week without a chocolate bar, is not normal behaviour for me, think its because I have booked my holiday now and dread the thought of wearing a bikini!

Cheers, everyone.
