Am I over-reacting?! Should I let this go?

I was rubbish at breastfeeding with both my dcs and was (and still am) very upset about it, but not place to get into that now. But the other day, a friend was bf'ing her baby at our house and 5yo DD came running in and said to me how funny it was and "come and look at some boobies!!!" [hmmm] and was all giggly and saying how funny it was. I was mortified that something so natural should be so funny to her. I didn't bf her brother long enough for her to remember, I guess. So have I made her think that bf'ing is weird because I didn't do it?! (like I need more issues with this!!) I always present bf'ing as the norm and explain that I had a problem with it but that's what you should do if you can etc. etc. so I really can't understand why she would react like this and I felt horrible and failure-ish about it. Or is it just the whole 'body parts are funny if you're 5' thing? (she does think it's funny if she sees us in the shower, or sees her brother having nappy changed etc.) Can I assume it's the latter and let the bf thing go, do you think?!

If she is 5 I would guess its probably more to do with body parts being funny than anything else

FiveGoMadInDorset · 10/01/2009 23:00

She is 5 and I guess doing the body parts thing.

carrotsandpeasifyouplease · 10/01/2009 23:01

i think you are over reacting, I don't have a five year old but it seems that it is the "body parts are funny" think of it from her point of view if shes never seen another womans breasts before - a 15 year old would probably have the same reaction.

CharCharGabor · 10/01/2009 23:02

Definitely the 'body parts are funny' thing. Don't worry

whyme2 · 10/01/2009 23:05

Oh yes 5 year olds love all talk about boobies and bottoms. It is just part of their development. Also I bf all my dcs but DD1 still thinks her baby doll should have a bottle despite me bf in front of her.
HTH

Thanks everyone. Especially good to know about your experience, whyme2! Sigh, kids - just as I was starting to let this all go (even got comfortable with bottle-feeding in public as realised people wouldn't necessarily think I was anti-christ) something new comes along to make me feel rubbish about it again! Anyway, your comments were v. helpful, thank you

Definitely 'body parts are funny'. When my brother was 5 he used to take his PJ bottoms down in the living room, jump up and down to make his 'boy bits' jiggle and run off laughing.
idiot.

faeriemoo · 10/01/2009 23:35

Yep agree with everyone else. I think it was about naked body parts rather than anything else.

Tinkjon · 11/01/2009 07:02

LOL, aurorec

I have a 5 and 3 yr old and am bf 8month old, they both think it is v funny when seeing me getting dressed/undressed and are fascinated with the whole feeding thing so I agree just a stage they go through!!

TheBayingBanshee · 11/01/2009 08:02

Even if you had bf her till she was two she wouldn't remember and still say exactly what she did. Totally normal. Loads of my friends kids stare at me when I bf whether their parents did or not. Please don't feel bad. It really isn't the be all and end all of the world.

FaintlyMacabre · 11/01/2009 09:39

My bf 14 month old thinks my breasts are hilarious- he prods them and giggles! (NB they look normal to me)
So I'm sure it's just normal child behaviour.

hercules1 · 11/01/2009 09:53

I bf dd till she was 3- she's now 5 and she would have done the same as your dd.

Marthasmama · 11/01/2009 09:58

I have a five year old boy and a three month old girl who I am breast feeding. My DS thought it was hilarious the first time he saw me feed his little sister, but he has found boobies amusing for ages. He was breast fed until he was 7 months and was boob obsessed until he was about 2 yrs old. If he sees Kylie's video for 'I can't get you out of my head' he sniggers and points out that you can see her boobies. It is entirely normal five year old behaviour. You definately don't need to worry! Oh and he was digusted at the idea that I had breast fed him when I told him.

StealthPo09IsHere · 11/01/2009 10:18

at least she will drow out of it, I think a boy would snigger until into his 20s whether he had been bf or not

StealthPo09IsHere · 11/01/2009 10:19

drow = grow
sigh

Tinkjon · 11/01/2009 14:56

Oh thank you, thank you, you are all very good at this I definitely feel better about it now, thanks so much! Faintylemacabre, my DS did that to me the other day - he just grabbed one and started squeezing! All that was missing was a loud "HONK, HONK!" noise from him
