HELP! Painful lump won't go away

I have a painful blocked duct in right breast and it won't clear. I have tried the Kellymom recommendations but nothing's changing. The lump is painful when feeding and tender even when not feeding. DD seems to be struggling to get milk out of that side too. It feels like a big blockage. I have BF for 6 months now. I'm getting worried. Think I might have to stop BF.

Have you tried hot bath and immersing totally under water? Have you got a breast pump? What about a bf support group, someone might be able to help you there.

I'm sure someone will be able to help, bumping your post!

hi, I have had this lots of times and you defintialy don't need to stop BF if you don;t want to. What worked for me was feeding DS straight after a hot bath and massaging and massaging the bump as I fed him. Luckily for me, my DS is happy to stay on for hours so after several days and many loooong feeds it finally cleared. It is a nightmare but i'm sure you will be able to clear it.

if it is redor inflamed you should see your Gp though

I would go to the doctor but in the meantime, blast it with the shower as hot as you can bear it.

hot flannel and massaging lump used to work for me. But would see GP - don't stop breastfeeding until you've had medical advice.

Try combing witha wide toothed comb or a hairbrush with bobbles on the bristles! Sounds daft but is really good. Are you taking ibuprofen too?

WilfSell · 03/01/2009 15:23

Yes, wot everyone else said. Feed more, not less on that side, ibuprofen for pain and also to reduce inflammation (it is usually this that makes the lump, not backed up milk: the actual blocakge usually quite small).

Massage and comb towards the nipple before and after every feed, and lots of hot soapy water, warm showers etc as well. You could also try hot gel pack in between feeds as well. You only really need to visit GP if you feel feverish etc since most blocked ducts clear of their own accord in 2-4 days...

Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement- much appreciated. Lump is mostly cleared with the aid of ibuprofen, and hot baths with a soapy comb and BF first on that side.

Good news RK. Keep an eye out for it coming back and get to it straight away though.
