Intermittent burning pain in breast that is constant when baby nurses; no obvious blockages......help :0(

DS is nearly eight weeks and Bfing hasn;t been easy. his latch has been poor from the beginning, we have had two bouts of thrush and I've had mastitis that came on so very suddenly with no apparent reason (no blocked ducy or lumpen-ness to speak of)

that was nearly three weeks ago and I got through it by feeding lots and lots and didn't need to take any antibiotics.

I started expressing last week and did so for about four days in a row. I didn't express yesterday and my boobs are understandably a wee bit engorged today. However, I also have this burning sensation in the boob that had the mastitis. I am getting an intermittent burning stabbing pain, coupled with pretty constant burning when DS is nursing on that side. It is also rather burny on that side when I get letdown when feeding from the other side (iykwim)

there is no obvious blocked duct, and no swollen areas/areas of redness. Just this burning pain on the areoli itself extending into my nipple.

Any ideas of the cause or how to troubleshoot this problem?

tia

It sounds like the sort of pain I associate with a blockage or a few days after clearing one. Have you tried expressing? Does the milk look the same as usual? How is your ds when he feeds on that side?

It could be the beginning of a blockage, sometimes I've experienced pain before any lump becomes obvious. Have you tried massaging, using heat, expressing etc?

Tbh, you'd probably be best to give one of the helplines a call in the morning.

thanks for your reply grendle

I did some hand expressing before I went to bed last night and it felt like their were two hard lumps in the are of the nipple; harder than the usual full duct feeling that is. He's just fed from that side this morning and the pain has gone and it's no longer burning, so I guess it was the start of a blockage. The ducts feel as normal as well.

I'll be aware of that in future and will make sure I don't go cold turkey on expressing either!
