some of you may know may saga...ds is breastfed at 8mths exculsively, my aim was 6mths but then reacted allergically to the cows formula, got mumsnet advice/input on soya and did my own reading up, so not too happy with that substitute.

have been trying him regularly with both but he nearly always throws up after it, as well after soya yogurts..
anyway went to doctor today to try and find a solution as i really want to cease the feeding in the day and evening, as i really need a break from "home"life.

well he was a big pain in the ars*, so unhelpful, sprouted of my knowledge of soya to him and he said well 4mths (to age 1yr) wont make that much of a difference, right thanks, and i said but i want to curtail the breastfeeding, i am tired, well there is nt really much else
i asked about allergy testing because i am not convinced that he is totally allergic, dont know what he is, and he poofed poofed - waste of time in other words.

so i left with a presrciption for another brand of soya formula - it might the brand he said, after 4 cows milk formulas that makes sense.

Sorry I have not read your whole saga but have you tried Nanny goat milk as a substitute?

What solids does he eat? Can he tolerate any dairy foods at all? He will be able to get calcium etc. from non-dairy foods too. Have you been referred to a paediatrician or dietician?

I agree with Mears - my kids hate dairy but they have plenty of calcium substitutes.

i did offer the nanny cant remember what happened then it was hives, you've already contributed to my previous threads, so i know its a bore and thanks for your insight

he eats very well,
porridge, chicken + veg at lunch, and dinner too but i havent really given him dairy in cookedfood, i thought i might try a cheese sauce on pasta tomorrow and see what happens, you know there are days i love feeding him myself and nights i dont

he takes a morning feed and i have gotten him to take just one more in the day around 2.30 and then 6.30, he might get one out of me at midnight as his is current habit , said night feeding stopped on another thread but i lapsed....

he said he refer me if he continues to throw up - so i said in the next 24hrs or week, well see how bad it is? grrrrrrrrrrr

If he eats well why not scale his breastfeeds down to a couple a day - that way he will still be getting some milk and you will have more freedom.. Give him water/juice to drink at other times. Definately speak to a dietician to make sure he gets his calcium needs from other sources.

Try looking at the Vegetarian Society and the Vegan Society's websites for info on dairy-free cooking.

To be fair to the GP, breast feeding & the ins and outs thereof are not taught at medical school or during GP training - most GPs who know a lot about feeding only do so because they've had children themselves! GPs are by definition generalists - would your healthvisitor not be more help (apologies if you've tried that....).

nik my hv advised the allergy testing so thats why i went to him, i know i can sort it all out myself but it was just his unhelpfulness, it seemed oh well youre breastfeeding so keep it up, good chap type of thing!

I'm sorry to hear the GP is so useless.

There are some non-dairy foods with calcium in them. Tinned red salmon is one good example that might go down well? (The kind with the bones in - any fish where you eat the bones is good, actually.)
