Could this pain be connected to breastfeeding?

When I feed DS2 at night, we lay on our sides, tummy to tummy and I sort of angle my body away from him a bit in case I doze off. I'm getting a sharp pain below the breast, almost in my ribs, on the side that I'm NOT feeding on, as I feed.

Do you think my positioning is wrong? If I feed from left breast, for example, my left arm is usually under my head under hte pillow iykwim and my right arm will be holding my large nork away from baby's nose . My upper body will be slightly tilted away from him and my lower body will be level with him.

I hope that makes sense!

MamaG - I'd suspect your awkward position is indeed connected with the pain. Maybe now's the time to experiment

Thanks, but I don't really know HOW to lay down comfortabl with him any ohter way! Am I destined to sit up in bed to feed?!

The angling of your body away from him isnt needed, I would say, MamaG. No harm in dozing off when feeding. There are rules about how to co-sleep safely, and as long as you follow them, all should be well

Thanks tiktok. Ummmm could you point me in the direction of the rules?

Where are you putting your on top arm? I find it helpful to put it above myhead under a pillow which make the position a lot more comfortable.

Also agree, tuck baby MG into your bady - so lovely!!

Sorry that should be underneath arm!

Trying to find some images - this doesn't show the arm above the head but does show the closeness - I don't think arm around baby like seond pic is comfy

ninjinglebells · 19/12/2008 11:26

this is more like it.

Good Luck

another one but the mum looks too glam for my liking.

I'm guessing you're getting the idea

MamaG · 19/12/2008 11:31

Thank you very much for that tiktok. Looks like we're ok as I don't smoke or drink or take drugs and ensure that ds2 isn't covered up by anything other than his own sleepbag thing. DH is very against co-sleeping but sometimes I just can't help falling asleep. We (DS2 and I) are in a separate room to him though, so he can bog off

Interesting what it says about BF mothers adopting a protective position while sleeping. I do wake up in exactly the same position that I am when feeding, just with my top arm cradling him

I will stop angling my body away from him and see what happens, thank you
