My baby was born this morning and has only fed once, is this ok?

Looking for reassuramce/advice. DS was born at home with no drugs etc, very healthy at 7lb 9oz, He had a feed a couple of hours after birth but since then he won't feed, just wants to sleep. Is this okay? I have tried stripping him down etc but he just doesn't want to feed yet. He has also been bringing up a fair amount of mucous.

Should I just sleep with him and enjoy it, or should I be trying to express and feed him?

He has had access to the breasts pretty much constantly, I am just sitting/lying with them out constantly! Skin to skin makes no difference.

Help!

yes, it's ok, as long as he's got plenty of opportunity. think it's pretty nrmal for them to not want much for the first 24 hours. he'll be tired after all that being born stuff

congratulations

Definitely sleep with him while you can! My dd did this and I thought she was a lovely placid baby..until she woke up a few hours later and fed constantly and never slept for what felt like months. If he doesn't want to feed just now I'd try and get some rest, but it might be worth just putting him near the breat every now and then. Congratulations, btw!

fondant4000 · 18/12/2008 22:30

He's tired out poor thing

I'm not an expert, but both of mine slept about 12 hours after the first feed.

I bet he'll be more active tomorrow. Even then it varies - dd1 was feed, feed, feed after 24 hours, but dd2 was a more settled feed for 10 mins, sleep 3 hours kind of baby.

As long as you're there, he'll find you. Get some sleep while you can - (and congrats)!

TheProvincialLady · 18/12/2008 22:31

Oh thanks, I will try to relax then and get some sleep. I keep going over the birth in my mind - it was so easy and relatively painless, I can't get over it!

awwwwwwwww just wanted to say congratulations - does he smell lovely......i am a bit jell

mamijacacalys · 18/12/2008 22:31

Congratulations on your DS!

His behaviour sounds normal to me as my DS was exactly the same (6lb 13). He mainly slept for the first 24-36 hours and was hardly interested... became a total boob monster after that though.

You are doing everything right with the skin to skin ..

It will soon change but I know it's worrying when it's your first....

PS In the early days establishing bf, I found it easier to sit in an upright armchair and having DS on a pillow rather than cuddling him in bed. HTH

DisenchantedPlusBump · 18/12/2008 22:32

Awww, he will feed when he is ready.

Congratulations!

Can I have some of your labour and homebirth vibes please?

Tryharder · 18/12/2008 22:32

Oh congrats!!!

Both of mine after the initial feed didn't feed much for the first day. Sort of the lull before the storm....

As thisisyesterday said, they're knackered from the birth. sounds like you are doing a great job - cant believe you are actually in a state to use the computer. Get some sleep, missus!

dizzyjingles · 18/12/2008 22:33

oh well done you completely normal btw

does he have a name?

TheProvincialLady · 18/12/2008 22:34

OK, am going to sleep now, night all!

Congratulations! My DD didn't feed for ages and was also very mucousy, apparently completely normal but my DD started bringing up bright green stuff - if that happens, call the hospital (am sure you know this but I didn't).

I am so jealous, enjoy these lovely early days

TheProvincialLady · 18/12/2008 22:35

No name yet dizzy, we took 6 weeks over DS so don't hold your breath...

his stomache is teeny atm (hv showed me a tiny ball yeasterday which is the size a newborns stonach is), and he is probably vetry tired from being born. dd4 slept most of her 1st 2ays, but had some day/night confusion.

give him plenty of skin to skin and oppertunities to feed.

and congratulations!

fledtoscotland · 18/12/2008 22:37

congratulations! DS2 was really mucousy for the 1st 48hrs and he didnt really start to feed until he was about 12hrs old and hasnt stopped since. think its pretty normal

christmasteafortwo · 18/12/2008 22:41

Congratulations - give him a gentle and loving kiss on the head from all of mn!!!!

What are you planning on calling your new lovely little???

dizzyjingles · 18/12/2008 22:45

lol PL, take your time then - am sure you'll decide on something lovely

give him a lovely big newborn sniff from me

tiktok · 19/12/2008 11:22

TPL - all sounds fine, you are doing lovely snuggly things with him close to you, he has already fed, no need for anxiety, enjoy the closeness and you can assured ....it will happen!

tiktok · 19/12/2008 11:23

Just worked it out - this was yesterday morning, so I would be really surprised if he did not feed, probably lots, through the night

LazyLinePainterJane · 19/12/2008 11:50

The mucous will mean that he feels quite full as well. DD was the same, full of it, kept sicking it up and wasn't interested in feeding. We got there in the end.

fondant4000 · 19/12/2008 12:01

TPL - Not sure if you're a regular or not but tiktok knows her stuff. If she says it's OK, it's def OK! What a lovely start for you

TheProvincialLady · 19/12/2008 13:24

Hi Tiktok yes he fed 4 or 5 times in the night so that was great He's very sleepy again, would like to feed but is too tired I think. Last time was at about 8.45. I am anxious because my DS1 would not latch on and feed at all, but DS2 has already had more breast feeds than DS1 ever had so things must be going ok! Also he has just been checked over by MW and GP and they have no concerns so I will stop fretting.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance, I so appreciate it and especially last night. What would I do without MN?

I remember mine sleeping an awful lot for the first 24 hours and not doing much feeding yet. I wouldn't worry. Congratulations
