Reflux? thinking of trying C&G comfort or aptimal easy disgest?

Think my little on ehas reflux, seeing health visitor this afternoon.

Thinking of changing his milk to cow and gate comfort or aptimal easy digest to see if this helps, any suggestions

Feeding is becoming such a nightmare, me and him in tears. Have done all the usual advise, propping up etc but only small improvements.

Getting really down about it and could do with some words of wisdom!

Take him to GP first and ask to try Gaviscon. If that seems to help, even a bit, he may well have reflux. IME HVs have very little experience of reflux. We ended up using a thickened formula at night (mixed feeding) after the gaviscon stopped working and we had a different medicine - NB you can't put gaviscon in the two types of formula you mention. Also there isn't much difference between formulas. C & G comfort is about a pound cheaper tho Good luck.

All three of mine have had reflux. I have tried infacol before a feed (mild improvement) and a slower flow teat. Otherwise lots of BIG LONG bibs and a dummy straight after the feed! Icombine feed at mo and am sad to realise DD3 (4 months) throws up more after breast milk than bottle. There is prob good medical advice out there, but I found Ijust had to accept that they would be sick and cover everything. If you're feeling very low try passing babe onto a well dressed friend with no kids straight afterwards - Always funny hehehe

ephrinedaily, I agree about HVs - they didn't offer much just endless looking at growth charts!

Mummywannabe · 09/12/2008 10:54

thanks ladies

He is more in pain than sick, arching back. can get feed down him but its so stressful.

Will see what HV says (think i am lucky so far mine has been a star) then will see G.P

Sounds more like silent reflux (like mine had) def. ask for gaviscon, maybe your HV can prescribe it? It's a nightmare isn't it. If you want to give the thickened formula a try first (and I do think it helped my DS a bit) then go for the Cow & Gate, he might be on it for a while and it's definitely cheaper!. Oh yes and with the medicine my son improved very very quickly.

get a prescription for SMA Staydown.
it works a treat. my DS had it til his reflux calmed down at 7mths. it's expensive without a prescription but it does stay down and helps them put on weight.
can't recommend it enough.

here

BONKERZ · 09/12/2008 12:54

we were given enfamil for DD for her reflux, got it on prescription after trying C&G comfort and SMA staydown which worked for a few days then stopped working. ENFAMIL was the only thing that worked!

macherie · 09/12/2008 13:01

My ds had reflux, and to cut a very long story short (consultants visits, hospital tests, prescription formula, and medication) the only thing that worked was taking him to a Cranial Osteopath.

She fixed the problem in a few visits. I really recommend trying this.

littleboyblue · 09/12/2008 13:03

Infamil here too, brilliant stuff

Mummywannabe · 09/12/2008 21:23

Thanks very much

health visitor very helpful, seems to think its not true reflux as is gaining weight well but thinks he has some gastric discomfort. Recommended cow and gate comfort for a week to see if improvement is made.

Feel a bit better in myself about things. He also fed well this afternoon which helped. Will see ehat happens over next week. Will also look into craniel osteopath - sorry for being dim but whats the link with reflux, someone esle suggested this and i'm intriged!

Someone recommended cranial osteopath to us too but i didn't do it.
My ds was gaining loads of weight in spite of sicking up most of his feeds. He was off the chart at 6 weeks. IME, hv didn't seem to know too much about reflux

Mummywannabe · 10/12/2008 21:09

Well he refused cow and gate comfort, are they all similar (aptimal easy digest etc), is it worth trying others.

Gonna give dr brown bottles a whirl tomorrow to see if this helps

OP posts:
littleboyblue · 10/12/2008 21:22

My ds was on sma gold until he was prescribed Enfamil, we also used dr brown bottles but that was more to help with the colic than the reflux, but as everything seemed to get better at around the same time, it's difficult to say whether he actually suffered colic or just reflux, whether it was both, whether we'd got to the point where he was outgrowing it naturally or whether a little of everything was helping. Anything is worth a go though in't it?
Not sure about any other brand of formula and how different/similar they are, I didn't try any other brands.

Mummywannabe · 10/12/2008 21:26

Thanks littleboyblue. Getting so fed up with the stress at each feed. Sure it will get better

Of course it'll get better and a few months later, you'll forget how hard it all was.

Mummywannabe · 10/12/2008 21:32

Thanks.
