have a few drinks if DS (6months) feeds at 7pm then not again til 7am. Will it be out of my system by the morning without having to express it away?

how many is a few?
I'd have happily had 1-3 beers and fed.

minesamonkey · 24/11/2008 21:24

I'd have 1 or 2 if he's going that long between.

Neenztwinz · 24/11/2008 21:26

Apparently not much alcohol goes into your milk anyway, only as much as goes into your blood (ie 0.8% of blood alcohol is over the limit, so after that many drinks your breast milk is also only 0.8% alcohol.) That is what I was told on these very boards anyway!

FWIW I drink quite a bit of alcohol and don't express it away. I used to till I read about the above (I also have 6mth olds).

But it would definitely have left you system by the morning anyway.

cmotdibbler · 24/11/2008 21:26

If you would be fit to drive (or indeed fit to look after a baby) then you are fine to bf.

Actually, as the amount of alcohol in your breastmilk is pretty small, even when drinking, you'd have to get pretty drunk to affect your baby. And alcohol goes out of your BM, just like your blood, so you don't have to express it away

hotpotmama · 24/11/2008 21:26

Probably 2 or 3 glasses of wine.

Great stuff.

Am not planning on getting steaming drunk, am just going out with the girls, first time in about 10 months and wanted to have a few glasses of wine as my friend and her family are leaving for Oz in a week .

Yep - enjoy!

hannahlouhoo · 24/11/2008 21:32

I suppose it depends on how many drinks? I feed my baby the morning after the night before, and see no ill effects. But then again i am a bit of a rebal and have never adhered to all the rules( peanuts, shell fish and small amounts of alcohol in pregnancy and bf!)

sorry that most likely is not much help! what about expressing a couple of ounce for morning if you are worried?
btw i can never throw bm away as it takes so long to drag out of me!

hotpotmama · 24/11/2008 21:45

No, can't be bothered expressing, would rather just stick to 1 or 2 glasses of wine.
The winos I am out with can make up for my poor intake of alcohol.

You could have a whole bottle and still be fine to BF in the morning.

I had a whole bottle with dinner at Saturday night (grandparents were babysitting) and Bfed my DS when I got in (at about midnight). I have never seen any effect on the twins from drinking, none of this 'sleeping for 26 hours straight after getting drunk' that we hear from our parents!

mumnosbest · 25/11/2008 19:39

As said earlier, I'd have a few drinks and feed the next morning, however once or twice I've had to pay for this with very stinky, not so nice nappies (not sure if this might be related)

PartOfTheHumphreysGroup · 25/11/2008 19:54

you can get tests for your milk :-)
They are called milkscreen, I get them from eBay. Don't use them very often but have come in useful for surprise middle of a night feeds.

A bottle of wine is about 8 units so would be out of your system in about 8 hours so fine by morning, although I've yet to work out exactly what bad thing would happen if you do feed them while drunk (apart from possible dropping incidents!) - general consensus seems to be that your letdown might not be so strong and the milk might taste a bit different so the baby might not drink so much.

i woud and do
i have an 11 week old and do

SydneyB · 25/11/2008 20:24

Currently bf 6 week old and is the only way I can get through the evening feeding marathon!

Neenztwinz · 25/11/2008 21:29

I couldn't face a drink at first - cos I was suffering with such extreme tiredness. It would have knocked me out!
