Want to introduce a bottle a day but my 5 month old won't cooperate. Should I try a cup instead? And what type of cup?

Hi,

DD2 exclusively breastfed. She's 5 months old and I'm keen to drop one or two feeds by Christmas in conjunction with beginning to wean her over the next few weeks. (She's a big baby and is very interested in food)

I've been trying to introduce a bottle at the last feed (11pm) over the last few days (the Tommee tippee one that looks like a boob) She refuses to take it.

I read on here someone suggested going straight to a cup - is this a good idea? As in a normal (plastic) cup - or one of the sippy cups? (not sure what's meant by a cup)

She is very placid baby who nurses quickly and doesn't use the boob for comfort btw.

I don't mind persevering with the bottle but isn't it daft if I'm going to move her on to a cup in a month or two?

Hope someone can offer advice

thanks

eviz

Are you me??? I was just about to post the same thing. My ds is 5.5 months and we are having the same problem. I ahve been really ill this weekend and had a blocked duct and was generally feeling very crappy when I realised that ds doesn't take a bottle happily so would be completely stuck if I am ever ill again and someone was available to have him for a few hours so I can sleep. He has started to bite too which is just horrible I expressed 8 oz in one sitting today (both sides) and he has had none of it. Just will not take a bottle at all. He doesn't sleep very well at night either, we co sleep and I have had no luck with having him in his cot as he wakes up so often to feed. The words 'rod' 'own' and 'back' come to mind. The thing is I am just so tired, I am so desperate for him to sleep through, just one night to give me a break. Fwiw, my ds hated the tommee tippee bottles. Whenever he has taken a bottle it has been MAM ones. I hope someone comes along with some proper advice soon. I fed dd until she was 10 months but at this rate I really feel like giving up with ds which I didn't expect at all

Hi littlelamb,

Sounds like you are having a tough time honey! I'm sure you haven't really made a rod for your own back.

DD2 only feeds once in the night (4:30am, without fail). I'm kind of hoping she'll drop that once she's weaned.

The only reason I want to start dropping the BF is because we're spending Christmas with DP's family, and I'm not comfortable BF in public (my hangups)

Plus it's getting too bloody cold to have my nips out these days!
