DS (nearly 8 months) is teething horribly and has vile cold. He has probably eaten one day's worth of solids in the last five days. Maybe not even that. Anyway, he is pooing 3 times a day, it's very runny (brown)and it STINKS. He is breastfeeding a LOT, lost three feds last night due to cough-induced vomit. My mum is telling me off for giving him milk, but he doesn't do bottles, will only sip water from a cup for two sips and never milk, and I can't exactly water down my boobs. My point is (sorry very very very tired) is this(rancid poo) normal? He has lost just over a pound this week from all this. Am assuming this is normal and he will eat. Goodness I need some rest.

Giving him milk would not be good, but breastmilk is not milk IYSWIM so keep feeding him in case he gets dehydrated.
When DD2 was this age she got a bad d+v bug and I was told to give her dioralyte, I can't even get ebm down her, she certainly wouldn't take this!
Have you tried calpol/ Sometimes that makes DD's nappies horrific.
Rancid BF poo is not really normal though, I would take him in to GP for a once over just to put your mind at rest.

Breastmilk is the right 'treatment' for babies ill with gastro infections. But a baby this poorly needs to see a doctor. Why on earth your HV or baby clinic did not refer you (presumably you had him weighed at the clinic?) I have no idea

turtle23 · 20/11/2008 09:23

"babies who are teething/coldy sometimes do not eat, have upset tums and are miserable." Says HV. After waiting for 36 hours we have dr appt this morning at 1130. I hate the NHS.

Glad you have the doctor's appointment.

Breast milk is absolutely the best thing - when my dd2 was in hospital with awful diarrhea the doctors encouraged me to carry on bfing her.

Chirpygirl · 20/11/2008 09:34

God they are crap aren't they! That is true, but there is upset tums and bad diarrhea...2 completely different things IMO!

turtle23 · 20/11/2008 12:47

Dr says diarrhea from teeth and normal. Teeth normal. Has ear infection and cough. Argh.

It's not really normal for a baby to lose a pound of weight in one week due to teething

Chirpygirl · 21/11/2008 07:58

Hi Turtle, hows DS doing today? have you got anti b's for the ear infection? I have found that when DD's have bad ears they don't eat properly, maybe cos their jaws hurt, so hopefully when ti starts to clear he will start eating, but in the meantime keep BFing him as it will get more nutrition than solids would.
When DD2 had virus she didn't eat solids for about 3 or 4 days, just fed like a newborn.

Hello all...oh gawwwwd what a night. He is no longer hot, dr said infection caught v early and she must have been right as temp is nearly normal. Still no solids really, but he fed for a total of (counting on fingers...) 5 hours last night after he went to bed. He must be feeling a bit better. Also managed a rice cake and one spoon of fruit this morning.

Oh. Yes. AB's given. Couldn't really say no this time.

I know what you mean, I don't believe inm antib's for everything but when it affects them like that I feel I have to.
Glad he is feeling a bit better, if you think about it, I don't eat when I am ill so now he is feeling better he may slowly get his appetite back
