My DD is 2.4 and Bfing regularly day and night. We?re happy with this situation and don?t want things to change until she is ready to wean herself. However, we want to TTC for No 2, and I?ve still not had a period. No period since Oct 2005!!!! I?ve started charting to see if I can spot any pre- ovulatory signs; it?s all just one big waiting game. I have two questions.
Q1: What is the longest anyone has known anyone to go without a period whilst Bfing?
Q2: Has anyone in a similar situation continued to BF at full pelt and after a long time without a period had them just come back without seeing a reduction in the frequency first?

DD is 25 months, ds 4 months. no periods for three years so far!

Do you have any signs of fertility?

boogeek · 13/11/2008 22:30

kellymom has some stats, though they don't specifically answer your question (just say that 8% of women who are breastfeeding an over-2-year-old haven't yet had a period). DD2 is 2 and I haven't had a period yet: with DD1 (to answer your Q2) it was 21 months and did coincide with her sleeping through, so quite a drastic increase in the length of time between feeds overnight.

Hi wmmc, you lucky lady catching your first egg!!! I'd like to do the same, hence the charting. Temps always very low, CM has gone from two years of dry dry dry, to sporadic patches of slight moisture which is a change in the right direction. But it still couldn't ever be remotely described as fertile CM. I've started taking Agnus Castus after much deliberation and research, in the hope that it will tip the prolactin/oestrogen balance in my favour. Did you have signs of fertility before your DS was conceived?

Hi boogeek, kellymom is a great site and has some blogs from women who have been TTC and BFing with no periods post 2 yrs, all of these women had to change some part of their routine/partially wean in order to regain their fertility. I suppose I'm hoping to hear that maybe there is this magical cut off point, say 30 months(?)for example, whereby my ovaries will just start to get going again. If my DD continues with this frequency until she is eighteen five years old, will I have to wait till then for a period!!!???

The BabyWearer has a support thread for extended BFers TTCing.

CarGirl · 13/11/2008 22:53

I have a friend who conceived her 4 youngest children only after dropping completely the last bf - they are all 2.5 years apart!!!

LoveGigi · 13/11/2008 23:03

Thanks AccidentalMum, I'll check out that thread. CarGirl, I reckon that will be me, but we are so far away from one last feed. My DD feeds as much as she can, I work part-time and she's fine when I'm not around but a "momo" monster (in her own words) when we're together!!! Unless I'm prepared to wean, I think I'll have to get used to the idea that DC2 will not be arriving anytime soon!!!!

LoveGigi - how much Agnus Castus do you take daily & has it affected your supply? I used to take it before baby to ameliorate shitty periods & unfortunately I got periods back again after only 4mths bfing so would like to start taking it again for that reason but haven't yet as paranoid about it affecting the bfing. (Either that or I could start waking DS up for feeds several times a night I guess.)
By the way, I used it succesfully for years to control periods before getting pregnant then stopped when TTC-ing & got pregnant straight away so maybe it also helped that. It can take a few months to work on regulating your cycle for PMS & period stuff so maybe you might need to take it for a while for fertility too. I was taking it for oestrogen-reduction effects (too much oestrogen due to and from fibroids) so maybe it just regulates & balances things regardless for the individual.

loveGigi - sorry for the delay replying - actually second egg. Miscarried the month before I got pregnant with DS (which sort of gave away that I was fertile) but yes had slight EWCM but not v much as was breastfeeding and it decreases the amount. Wasn't charting or indeed TTC! In fact we only had sex twice between having DD and conceiving DS and got pregnant both times

On average, it seems that perionds tend to return when you drop to one or two feeds a day. Although everyone is different!

LoveGigi · 16/11/2008 20:14

I'm back, sorry for long delay!

Elvisgirl - I'm taking Viridian brand Agnus Castus, you can take 1-3 capsules a day, I take 2 capsules which is 750 mg in total. There was such conflicting info online re AC but I have been taking it for 1 month now and have been monitoring my milk supply. I haven't seen any change in my supply at all. I did read somewhere that AC doesn't have much of an effect on established BFing, (think I read that on Kellymom, herb safety section)

WMMC - You must be super fertile! Are you now tandem feeding? How did the pregnancy effect your supply?
