our DS is only 12 days old but getting himself into a routine of sorts. My only main issue is that the early morning feed (any time between 2 and 5am depending how he's fed the day before) he wakes up and fusses for ages afterwards so I end up being up for 2 hours...we don't turn the lights on, keep everything as quiet as possible. I've realised it's better to change him mid feed to then encourage him to take a bit more (20 rather than 10mins) as otherwise he'll wake for another feed an hour or so later...but how to do that wihtout waking him too much? he seems to think darkened hours means wake up time!

That's perfectly normal at that age. You're doing the right things, but it takes a while for him to get the hang of it. By the time he's six weeks or so (and probably before that) he should have got the hang of the day/night thing. It's a good idea to get out of the house every afternoon for a bit -- that's been shown to help them adjust faster.

This is all normal for a newborn - really, it's not worth worrying about or trying to change it! He will start to make clearer distinctions between night and day as he grows
