EBF baby lactose intolerant?

Had my 6 week check yesterday. Mentioned to doc the rash ds has on his face and neck, doc took one look and asked if anyone in the family is lactose intolerant. Dd was (I was not able to bf her because of thrush).

Can an exclusively bf baby be lactose intolerant? What can I do - doc mentionned changes to my diet, eg cutting out dairy, but was a bit vague. Has anyone else had experience of this?

More likely to be cows milk protein intolerant, but many people use the term lactose even though that isn't strictly correct.

My dd was milk intolerant (grew out of it around 20 months), and sadly we've just established that 4 week old ds is too. No family history of this. Both were/are exc breastfed.

I have cut out all dairy from my diet. A bit of a pain, but you soon get used to it.

Anything specific you want to know?

Dd is now fine with cows milk, but she was having nutramigen formula until about 22 months; her intolerance manifested through severe acid reflux - she never had a rash.

When you cut dairy out of your diet, how do you make sure that you get enough calcium?

I use either soya or rice milk with added calcium, and eat plenty of things like sardines, figs, sesame seeds etc, which are all high in calcium.

No rashes here either, but know of plenty of people who have had this as a symptom.

Good luck.
