4 month old baby with reflux

Has anyone on this board had any experiene of their baby suddenly developing reflux at 4 months? She is now feeding as little as 60ml formula (Aptimil First) a time (only wants to feed every 4 hours even on so little). In between feeding she is happy as anything and even sleeping through the night. The coughing brought on by reflux is affecting her daytime naps.

Doctor has just started her on Infant Gaviscon and told to not worry about her little feeding at least for another week but it is so difficult not to worry as she is feeding on so little (300ml of forumula a day).

Does anyone else have experiences of this at 4 months or so and did weaning onto solids help the situation?

Any experiences and advice appreciated please.

Thank you.

Yes, my DD started at 4 months. We were given Gaviscon and it did seem to help and I had weaned her off by 9 months. Big mistake, it came back bit style and we were referred to a specialist as she was not thriving, we were then put on ranitidine which she was on until 15 months, now she is fine (18 months).

In my opinion Gavi is not great, I am totally sure it supressed DDs appetite although the doc said it didn't and it gave her constipation.

Try not to worry too much, it does pass. Sorry, baby just woken up got to run, just keep checking her weight and get a referral if she does not seem to respond to the meds.

It will be OK hun, xx

Sorry, back again! Busy afternoon.

You asked about weaning? My DD has always been a pretty hopeless eater. I know that they say weaning helps as the 'heavier' food helps to stay down but weaning before 6 months can also have its issues. What does your HV recommend? Are they any good?

There is a good website called Little Refluxers, I got a lot of info from there, here is the link: [http://www.littlerefluxers.co.uk]

It is hard when they are hardly seeming to eat, a real worry. Small regular feeds are probably best. Try to keep baby as upright as possible for feeding then upright for 15 mins or so after a bottle if possible, hard at night I know.

As I said we ended up on Ranitidine as we had 3 solids months from 6-9 months of her not being able to take a night time bottle without it all coming back up again. But it did get sorted and now she is fine.

Good luck - any concerns please speak to your GP. This is perhaps not their area of expertise so if you are in any doubt about baby thriving you must push to see a specialist as they can prescribe better to get things sorted for you.

Good luck!
