What is formula supposed to smell like?

Just tried to give DS, 6.5 months, formula for the first time. Tried Aptamil and it smelt absolutely disgusting. Seems to be well within its sell by date and I made it up properly. Is this normal? No wonder DS didn't take it!

IME it smells foul, like gone off milk

scorpio1 · 18/10/2008 18:31

sour-ish

Gangle · 18/10/2008 19:57

do babies always accept formula or do some reject it outright?

It does smell odd and at first I couldn't bear it. I'm using Aptamil too and I had to hold my nose when rinsing the bottles. But now, 9 months down the line, I'd have it in my tea if I had run out of milk and I happily eat DD's leftover Weetabix with it on. You do get used to it.

scorpio1 · 18/10/2008 20:04

dd won't even entertain the idea. She is an April baby too.

Gangle · 18/10/2008 20:16

really?? Interesting! I just don't think DS will change his mind which means I need to get expressing and build up a freezer full before I go back to work. I hate milk with a passion and the very smell of it made me gag! DH who loves milk also said it smelt putrid! How odd that babies like it!

sour fish. dd1 did't mind, though.

Gangle · 18/10/2008 20:18

that's it! I couldn't put my finger on what is smelt like but sour fish pretty much sums it up!

you can mix it - do 25% formula, 75% EBM

then alter over time until all formula

This is what im going to have to do. dd won't even do a bottle...

Gangle · 18/10/2008 20:20

neither will DS Scorpio! Little monkies!

The best one we got a result from (an oz, whoop whoop!) was the NUK one.

Gangle · 18/10/2008 20:28

ooh, me too! It's the only one he has ever taken and even then only twice when hungry and tired!

Oh- it is a vile smell isn't it.

LittlePushka · 18/10/2008 22:13

got a real shocker when I used it for DS2....really fishy I agree. I also thought it was off.

Formula for DS1 was lactose free and did not smell or taste fishy at all (hareder to mix though!)

I think the fishy smell maybe the omega 3 they put in these days.

MrsBadger · 18/10/2008 22:17

the ones with added omega-3 will always smell fishy because of the fish oil (blee)

Ones (eg Hipp Organic) with no fish oil smell better. Ready-to-feed smells least as you don't get the steamy waft when you pour on the hot water.

Gangle · 18/10/2008 22:18

do any of the others smell better? Originally thought of using Hip Organic but everyone said Aptamil was the best one to go for.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 18/10/2008 22:24

no hard evidence showing any are better than the others (the fish oils, 'immunofortis' etc are only advertising claims) so don't feel you have to use the one your mates say is the best.

esp if you think it smells rank

Gangle · 18/10/2008 22:32

thanks Badger. Just don't see how I can expect DS to drink it when it smells rancid. Will try Hip Organic tomorrow.

Scorpio, did you try Playtex disposable bottles? They were the only bottle ds3 would take in the end, he was a nightmare bottle refuser and I had to go back to work which made it ten times worse because I felt under such pressure! Also haven't tried them but the Adiri natural nurser looks good too. Both pricey options, it has to be said.

Sazisi · 19/10/2008 00:29

Aptamil smells the worst.
Holle and Hipp both smell fine
