ilovemydog · 13/10/2008 22:08

will do. Me and my H/V always like a good scrap debate...

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE · 13/10/2008 22:12

I'm seeing her on Wednesday so will ask then. Ridiculous the amount of rubbish some HVs spout. Mine is usually very up to date so she'll prob says it won't be.

Piffle · 13/10/2008 22:16

There aren't any yet, Caz! I've only just posted it.

Will do next time I go

TinkerBellesMum · 14/10/2008 20:52

That's a new one on me, will ask her on Thursday. She's a bit AP so I'm sure she won't be behind a change.

notcitrus · 16/10/2008 19:17

My HVs have emphasised the no-solids-till-6-months.

SIL2, though, has a 18-week baby who stopped gaining weight recently, and was advised by four HVs/GPs to a) bf more often, b) bf less often, c) bf plus some banana or baby rice after each feed, and d) not change anything at all.

Still, at least they didn't suggest switiching to formula.

Caz10 · 16/10/2008 21:59

A girl at my baby group was tearing her hair out at a v hungry 4.5mth baby when I was there...she said someone else had told her to put baby rice in his bottle...HV sucked her teeth and said "they do say 6mths you know..." but didn't qualify or explain why in any way....

TinkerBellesMum · 16/10/2008 23:38

Oh Caz, that's scary! Forget the age, she should have said something about the rice in the bottle.

I think if HVs explained how babies breastfeed to a bottle feeding mother it would explain better why they need to wait. When you're giving bottles it must seem never ending and pointless and I can see to an extent why parents give in on the solids a lot sooner than they might do. I think there's too much worry about offending people when in truth babies are babies and they don't know they don't have to train a bottle to give it more food in the coming weeks!

alittlebitshy · 20/10/2008 15:36

I went to get ds weighed today and saw a whole doubble display board on weaning. Up I trot to have a look and it blatantly says 4 months!!!!!!!!!! I thought of this thread so asked the hv why they had that up when the who says 6 months and she fed me (scuse the pun) crap about how it might be ok for bf babies, but forumla fed babies might need more, and saying 4 months means some people who are tempted to do it early may only do it at 3 months , and she started telling me that it's about allergies and 4 months is ok on that front. Was on about how people try and make it scientific but it's not, and if baby watches you eat try them on some baby rice. ffs!!!

Not v clear but a load of bolleaux.

Had cheek to write in ds's red book that we'd had anticapatory chat about weaning

FlabbyTumSquashyBum · 20/10/2008 15:48

I can't understand the whole thing about babies watchibg you eat being a sign of wanting food. Our babies love us and are intrigued by everything we do.

Well, next time I'm doing my make up I'll be sure to jot a bit on my 13 week dd because she watches me in awe when I'm doing it!

I'm so looking forward to the weaning chat with my hv. She already suggested that a bottle of formula would make dd more settled in the evening so weaning can't be far away either!

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/10/2008 15:59

I had a chat with my hv about this today and she was appalled that some hvs are giving out the wrong advice, as well as disappointed to learn that hvs get a lot of bad press in places like this . I ended up showing her both your site hunker (she liked the 'reasons to be proud' bit) and Aitch's, as she mentioned blw too. I think I got lucky with my hv (had her for dd too).

hunkermunker · 20/10/2008 20:26

ALBS Can you post that on my blog, please? Here, thank you.

If you have a good HV (like CSWS seems to - thank you for the plug! Hope all going well!), you're lucky - but it shouldn't be like that! So much of the advice we get is based on anecdote and personal hang-ups and it shouldn't be like that.

flabby My newborn was so alert after the birth she watched me eat my post-birth toast. She seriously looked like she wanted some............

MoonlightMcKenzie · 20/10/2008 20:41

My HV told me that she wouldn't be surprised if weaning went back to 4 months, because the gov have a lot of targets tied up to speech development in pre-schoolers and not eating lumps can be the cause of speech delay.

Apparently there is a window of opportunity for introducing lumps between 7-8 months and if baby rice is only started at 6 months, moving onto lumps will be expected at a pace too fast.

hunkermunker · 20/10/2008 20:47

Moonlight, PLEASE post that on the link below!

That's just mental - many, many babies weaned onto purees at 4mo aren't eating lumps during the window you describe.

And if you wean at 6mo, you can have them on lumps by 7mo anyway - whether you do BLW and have them on lumps from the off or not.

pudding25 · 20/10/2008 20:48

MM - please tell me that is really a load of crap before I start panicking that I am waiting until dd is 6 mths.

AnarchyAunt · 20/10/2008 20:50

If weaning at 6mths then why on earth would you be starting on goop baby rice anyway though?

Food, real food

hunkermunker · 20/10/2008 20:51

Pudding, it's a total load of crap.

Come and meet my 2.9yo DS2 if you want to see a baby who wasn't weaned till almost 7m (it was a v hot summer and I didn't want to interfere with his fluid intake, so didn't give him anything solid till it cooled down a bit) - he will chat your head off [anecdotal]

There's no way that's right - people who talk of weaning windows ought to be thrown through the nearest one.
