Well, it all depends. Is she breastfeeding, firstly?

OK, so, if her breasts are too full for her baby to latch on then expressing a little by hand will help.

Warm showers/hot flannels on her breasts will ease things, as will savoy cabbage leaves in her bra.

The best thing is to get the baby to latch on and feed frequently - probably every 2-3 hours IIRC.

I think Davina's pretty much covered it. Watch out for signs of mastitis. Maybe invest in some breastshells to catch leaked milk, breast pads, make sure her nursing bras fit properly.

Your pal will have contact with a midwife, still, mama....she can call her any time. She doesn't have to express unless she is v. uncomfortable and can't bear the feeling...most people don't need to.
