1 year old bfeeding in the night

Just wondered when he would definately be old enough to go through the night without feeding? He usually has one bfeed about 4am and I have tried to stretch it out later (before it was 2 feeds one at about 1am and one about 5am - so have stretched it out to one at 4am) but he cries and cries now if he doesnt get milk - and wont be settled any other way. Dh has tried but I dont want him to cry for half an hour if he is genuinely hungry (or for any other reason really).

Do some babies still need milk over night at this age, or should they be able to have enough before bed to go through the night?

If he is eating enough solids during the day then he doesn't need a night feed in a nutritional sense but he may need comfort or habit.

I definitely wanted a full night sleep at a year and we did get tough. I did send my DH and its very different to let them cry in the arms of a parent than alone. I would try and push back the feed forward 30mins until you get to an acceptable time 6am?, over a few nights. DH will not get much sleep but I'm sure you have done more than your fair share of night duty.

It took us just two nights for DD to sleep through at nearly a year old - she had been waking 2/3 times a night. She has slept through since, except for a handful of nights due to illness.

Good luck.

thanks tapster - i guess the choice is either a few nights (hopefully not more than that) of him being upset, or me just accepting that he feeds then, but i am pretty sure he gets enough solids so its probably habit.

I will give it a go. thanks.

[[http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/ap/sleep.asp this link] might help - it's strictly about co-sleeping but some of the info might be relevant for you.

My DD2 was like this she was waking 5 times a night at a year old and it was too much, what we did was not leave her but when she woke DP sat with her rocked her patted her shhed her, first night she cried for 50 mins second night 10 mins and slept through after this.

At no time was she left alone I think once she realised there was no milk on offer she settled herself back down again.

ds2 nearly
15 months only just started going through the night and that's not everynight.
There are 'sleep solutions' out there though.
