Do fully bf babies sleep thru the night at a younger age than fully ff babies?

(yes i know; How long is a piece of string?)

DS1 was ff and slept thru v early
DS2 was mix fed and slept thru majority of nights from around erm...4 or 5 months ish (he has night terrors so sleeping thru every night is out of the question!)
DS3 is bf and still wakes every 2 hours for a feed at 6 months. I am tired and looking forward to a full nights sleep again!

2 of mine were fully ff; one is exc bf

all slept through from 7 weeks 10-7

LittleMyDancingForJoy · 22/08/2008 21:51

as far as i know, ff babies do tend to sleep longer because formula takes longer to digest, so they feel full for longer.

however, all babies are different, so it's not a hard and fast rule.

DS (bf) didn't sleep through until about 9 months - sorry!

chipmonkey · 22/08/2008 21:57

There! That'll learn you to ask impertinent questions!!

MerlinsBeard · 22/08/2008 21:59

LOL chip monkey!

I seem to be properly researching all methods of feeding my children!! (all weaned differently as well!!)

Sorry! ds4 is fully bf and sometimes sleeps through, sometimes doesn't. I don't think I would use formula to get them to sleep, it could backfire on you if it made them colicky.!

lazyhen · 22/08/2008 22:02

My DD slept ALOT more once I'd switched her on to formula. I think she was so hungry and knackered from all her night waking as soon as she had a full belly she slept for ages. I mixed fed for a bit then switched onto FF.

I think she slept through with a dream feed from about 3 months and then we dropped that and she slept fully at about 4 months.

My friends who are exclusively BF their babies are all still up at least 3 times in the night (our babies are all 7 months now)

elmoandella · 22/08/2008 22:05

ds exclusively bf = no sleep. every 2 hour. once on solids. every 3-4 hour.

dd was ff = slept thru from 10-7 from 8 weeks.

constancereader · 22/08/2008 22:07

I mix fed but my ds was still terrible at staying asleep. He did not sleep through until about 14 months.

MerlinsBeard · 22/08/2008 22:12

Just to clarify, i am not planning on switching. Although babymonster will now take a bottle occasionally it does give him stomach ache (or some other thing that makes him wriggle and scream!)

I was just curious

Ds didn't sleep through til 14 months too - just about the time I decided to stop bf.

bythepowerofgreyskull · 22/08/2008 22:16

ds1 & 2 were both exbf
ds1 slept 12-6 at 6 weeks and 7-7 at 12 weeks
ds2 slept 10-5 at 8 weeks but 7-7 at 8 months

I don't think we did anything different.

BigBadMousey · 22/08/2008 22:24

DC1 Slept through at 8weeks with 1xFF st bedtime the rest bf

DC2 excl bf still not sleeping through at 2.4

DC3 Excl bf sleeping through most nights from 8 weeks (he's only 12wo)

charchargabor · 22/08/2008 22:28

dd is bf
slept through at 3 months then stopped again, hourly wakeups from then on and much tearing out of hair until last night! When she slept from 10-6 at 12 months . Probably won't last, but I definitely enjoyed it last night!

sweetkitty · 22/08/2008 22:28

I thought FF babies slept longer than BF babies as formula is harder to digest so fills them up for longer. A lot of people I know give a bottle of formula at night to help their babies sleep and I know I am tempted sometimes but from MN know it's not a magic bullet.

All 3 of mine have been BF from birth

DD1 11-6 at 6 weeks, 8-8 at 12 weeks
DD2 was still up 5-6 times in the night at 12 months I had to go on nursing strike to force her to sleep through once she realised no boob she stopped waking up
DD3 only 5 weeks but hoping she takes after DD1 than DD2.

ballstothehousework · 23/08/2008 12:03

DS 16 weeks and exclusively bf, been sleeping through from about 8 weeks. Really think it depends on the baby and not how they're fed.

aurorec · 23/08/2008 12:24

Yep. My daughter was exclusively BF, slept through at about 9 weeks, but then teething, plus moving twice in 3 months when she was 8 months threw her completely.
She now comes and goes on sleeping through (she's teething again-molars at 2.6)
