THRUSH - CVQ's little man may have it - would it explain how unhappy he is. Please come and share your experiences??

He has white spots on the roof of his mouth. He has just got out of hospital and did have ABs

Thrush can be very ouchy for babies, afaik. There's loads of stuff on kellymom about it, some is here.
Is there a bf friendly hv around, or a support group?

Sorry, took me a few minutes to sift through the mountain of stuff on kellymom. Hope he settles soon - would some calpol be in order? Or could she call beck into the ward where he's been the last few days for advice, or even just some reassurance?

have no experience of oral thrush in small babies but I have had it myself and I had a terrible taste in my mouth and probably appalling breath - so perhaps worth checking his breath?

tbh though, the only real symptom I had was the appalling taste - it wasn't painful or anything like that. Is it possible the white spots are small mouth ulcers? They of course would be painful and cause J a fair bit of distress. Plus make it harder for him to feed. I have suggested calpol already for pain/fever relief - I wouldn't normally but I was dead impressed when DS was given calpol post-op - he wasn't feeding cos the oxygen tube had roughed up his mouth - but as soon as he had the calpol he was able to feed properly again.

hes got some suspension the hospital gave me.hes had some not long ago.it was NSF that suggested looking in his mouth
ive looked and hes got some little white spots on the roof of his mouth but no where else?what i want to know is could these be what is causing him this distress or maybe adding to it at least?god i didnt even know he could get thrush

I don't actually have anything useful to say about thrush I'm afraid except maybe GP in the morning, maybe ask whether some yoghurt would help and I think it's worth him getting treated otherwise you can just pass it backwards and forwards

Don't be daft cvq, it's what it's all about! Do you have any symptoms? If you need treatment, make sure it's for both of you, otherwise you can pass it back and forwards to each other.
(Thrush is one of my dreads, never had it while bf-ing though).
I like that you're back to being cvq, coping is such a positive womanly function.
I think about you lots, though I haven't been on-line so much recently (pesky diy getting in the way). Life has been throwing so much at you in the last while, I feel there's bound to be something amazingly wonderful waiting for you some time down the line to make up for it all.
You're doing a fab job, if I knew you in real life I'd be really proud to have you as a friend.

My dd had this a few months ago, I was given some suspension by the dr which smelled of cherry menthol: this is an anti fungal not calpol. I wonder if you could get some of this. It didnt seem to bother her very much, and it had gone by the time I finished the medicine (5 days or a week? not long). And I was feeding and didnt get it in by breasts which I was worried about. So hopefully it will be gone soon

CVQ - I hope your GP prescribes something that will sort it out for you both. When I had it, they gave me 1% canesten cream which I applied to me after each feed, washing it off before the next one. It was a faff. But it sorted out the thrush very quickly.

well it is thrush.its on the inside of his cheeks aswell.i didnt see that lastnight.so weve been perscribed something called Nystatin.oh joy.

DS had it recently (still does a bit) (he's 9m) and it made him very unhappy. It put him off his food and he screamed a lot. Had Nystatin, but that didn't really work on the inside of his cheeks, so I was prescribed Daktarin (oral gel) as well for him (you can smear that on his cheeks). We're also trying to give him food with probiotics in.

He's happier now -- hope your lo gets better soon.

yes hes screamed on and off for days and was pulling off the breast alot.i had no idea this was the problem.hes been waking up an awful lot during the night aswell and not wanting to be parted from me
im hoping we can sort this out now and i can get my sanity back.
